#LetsStopBullying

I went onto YouTube and typed in ‘Kanye West” since I am a huge fan of his confidence and I really enjoy watching his interviews and concerts. I browsed through a few videos and somehow I ended up at a video called ‘Nick Vujicic’s story”.  Nicholas James "Nick" Vujicic is an Australian motivational speaker born with tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder characterised by the absence of all four limbs. As a child, he struggled mentally and emotionally as well as physically, but eventually came to terms with his disability and, at the age of seventeen, started his own non-profit organisation, Life without Limbs. Vujicic presents motivational speeches worldwide which focus on life with a disability, hope and finding meaning in life. He also speaks about his belief that God can use any willing heart to do his work and that God is big enough to overcome any disability.

I started watching more of the videos posted up of Nick and one stood out in particular. He was speaking at an everyday high school in one of the states in the US however this school had the highest percentage of bullying in the whole of the United States. He spoke to all of their students in the basketball arena hall, it was packed. He started speaking about bullying and what effect it has on the victims. He stood in front of the various sections of the stands and said that “it is statistically proven that 5 of you will commit suicide in every section of the stand.  5 people secretly hate life in every section and instead of helping them up and building their confidence you are breaking them down more.” See Nick was born with no arms and legs and there is no explanation as to why he was born in that way, neither his parents nor his doctor could give him an answer as to why. Nick didn’t give up, he learnt how to use his body in such a way that he could still do the basics like dress himself and brush his teeth. It takes so much of strength when you have a condition like that to actually stand up and make something of your life.

Bullying is a horrible thing and it is just as bad here as it is in the States, I want you to read this article, go onto YouTube and watch the video of Nick at that specific school where he spoke about bullying and I want you to share it with your friends and family. The main reason why bullying still exists in society is because the bullies do not understand how much of hurt and pain they bring to their victims. Imagine if we use that energy of bullying in a positive way where instead of bringing someone down rather elevate their confidence by saying something that you like about them. Life is so easy and society can be changed if we all work together and take steps to change the way people look at each other.

I want us to turn South Africa into a country where a bullying incident occurs maybe once a year, rather than every single day at most schools in South Africa. We need to encourage each other to see the good in people and emphasize their strengths rather than their weaknesses. Many of the kids being bullied today in school might have broken homes, they might be on the edge and that small comment or negative action can push them over.

Let us build a country that builds each other up. Let us support each other and push each other so that we all can be the best version of ourselves.
