Make a Difference and Stop the Violence Against Women and Children

2016-11-29 18:46

Annually from the 25th of November through the 10th of December, campaigns are held to stop violence against women and children. Violence against women, girls and children is a serious human rights violation with severe and huge costs on families, communities, economies and the health care system.

One of the biggest scourges in our communities is violence on women and children. It is so unfortunate that men and boys of every culture and belief system perpetuate violence against women and children; and that every religion, unfortunately, has been used to legitimise violence against women. In every country around the globe, women continue to experience violence in the domestic circle. Violence against women and girls is the result of discrimination against women and of the continuing inequalities between men and women.

Despite some gains being made to educate men and boys about prejudice behaviours and exploitation of women, abuse against women remains a huge problem in every community, with the perpetrators facing minimal or no punishment. Violence against women and girls occurs in all areas of society, regardless of race, class, age, religion, culture or ethnicity.

The key message of the 16 day campaign is that violence against women is a human rights violation, a serious crime against humanity and also to create awareness in society that violence against women and children is real, unacceptable and dehumanising. It is so unfortunate that instead of fulfilling all the promises that were made before marriage and showing affection, love and compassion to women, many men abuse their wives. Violence against women is widespread and affects every community, faith, race and social class.

We know women are subjected to physical, verbal and emotional abuse but what about the “silent traumas” – divorce, maintenance and the complications single mothers face raising children single-handedly?

Unfortunately, the divorce rate in every community and religion is on the increase. Divorce is so heart-breaking and challenging in so many ways, particularly to the innocent children and their mothers. According to numerous studies and reports the devastating effects of divorce on women and especially children are just too great to simply ignore.

Children are our hope and our future and we have to nurture, guide and educate them correctly. Children need a mother, a father and a stable home in order to grow up holistically.

In order to ensure lasting and quality marriages and for every woman to enjoy their fundamental human right to live a life of dignity and free from abuse, we need to design and implement effective programs in our institutions to promote commitment to marriage and most important we need to prepare our young people for marriage, parenthood and other social responsibilities.

I appeal to all individuals, religious and community leaders and religious organisations to address this hidden oppression and suffering. Women are being exploited because they are the weaker sex. Let us all join hands in fighting this scourge of divorce and women abuse.
