Mandela will never die!

Mandela will never die!

The conveniency of forgetting the fact that Mandela is, first and foremost, the implementor of the African National Congress (ANC) policies, and overall, of worshipping his individual brilliance, might prove to be detrimental to the livelihood of the masses, simply because investors and conflict-mongers of the world turn to be swayed by politically-inclined public opinions. They forget to recognize that what gives birth to individual courage is the context of their occurrence. This is not an attempt to trivialise his individual contribution and brilliancy.

To this end, Biblical narratives suggest that worshiping blessings more than the giver of blessings is problematic because it neglects the source of blessings.

This is, again, not an attempt to worship the ANC, but I think it is critical to appreciate the fact that there is no Mandela, as we know him, without the African National Congress and its policies.

Obviously, individual character traits and talents are important and deserve recognition. However, an amazing dancing skill without a stage to give expression to that brilliance is useless. For instance, Malema's expulsion from his political platform that rendered legitimacy to his rhetoric was imperative for the advancement and the expression of his talents. Helen Zille, without the second biggest political Party in South Africa is just another ambitious, and perhaps ordinary person. And so is Obama without the backing and power of the United States.

To view and assess Mandela outside of his context of operations is what they call 'travesty of justice', but obviously such deliberate acts of individualizing his achievement is of political importance to some, but might not function for the interest of the whole nation.

It is in times like these when it is essential to recognize the work of the African National Congress and its policies, and trust that such policies as well as the courage that delivered partial freedom to the masses is capable of taking the whole nation of South Africa to greater heights beyond Nelson Mandela's superior reconciliatory heart, the greatest African National Congress cadre.

I hope our love for Mandela is not only the function of our selfishness and what we gain from his existence, but also the facilitator of our willingness to give practical life to his ideals.

Mandela has died so many times, but he never stopped rising again and again. When he eventually dies for the last time, may he be resurrected through our relentless pursuit of that which he represents.

Lastly, allow me to argue that Mandela will never die. He died for the very first time in my view when his father passed away, and he was then resurrected inside the royal Thembu family.

When sentenced to life in prison, he died again and was buried at Robben Island for years. He was resurrected again in 1994 as the first Black South African President.

Two weeks ago, he died again on his way to the hospital, but doctors resuscitated him as Mandela in a critical, but stable condition (the Zulu language helps to convey the gravity of the condition: “ubangwa nezibi”), whatever that means.

When he dies again for the last time, I hope he is reincarnated through his works, and the efforts of those who choose to pursue his ideals. The world will forever be blessed by his presence in our memories as one of the greatest leaders who ever lived. Forever, he will stay with us through his significant existence, and continue to shape and inspire the lives of many generations to come.

Long live Rolihlahla Nelson Mandela, Umkhonto we Sizwe Commander-in-chief, Volunteer-in-chief of the defiance campaign, Revolutionary, Long-serving prisoner, Freedom Fighter, Volunteer in Chief, Terrorist, Peace Maker, Statesman, World Icon, and Legend of All times.
