Mangaung exclusive: Manuel not standing for NEC

2012-12-15 10:49

Minister in the Presidency, Trevor Manuel, has told Zubeida Jaffer, my co-editor of the Mangaung blog, that he will not be standing for re-election to the ANC's top body, the National Executive Committee.

Manuel told Zubeida Jaffer in an exclusive interview that it was a decision he had been mulling for some time and he had informed his ANC colleagues of it a while ago. Jaffer has reported her conversation with Manuel in a story  posted on early this morning.

Manuel said he had been on NEC for 21 years and it was time to move aside for a younger generation.  He was now more interested in playing a mentoring role. Manuel pointed out to Jaffer that he had implemented the resolution passed at the last ANC elective conference in Polokwane in 2007 to come up with a National Development Plan(NDP).  He has devoted the past four years to a comprehensive analysis of the challenges facing the country and  drawing up a plan to  meet them. The national and provincial NDP offices are functional and ready to proceed with implementation. The National Development Plan will take centre stage in policy discussions this week and the conference this week  is widely expected to endorse it.

Other writers on this week are four young students  from the University of Free State journalism department. They will be  conveying the voice of youth, which is highly relevant, given that the under 34s  make up almost two thirds of the population.

Zubeida and I arrived in Bloem this morning. Registration was wonderfully smooth and efficient, which was a nice surprise, as our four student writers encountered long queues when they registered yesterday. Stay posted for more news from Mangaung.
