?Memo to Khatija......why I shall be voting in the May 2014 elections

2014-04-08 17:00

?Wow what a roller coaster of these past twenty four hours we've been on, haven't we KT? Now that Shrien Dewani is safely under lock and key in SA and we are currently being entertained to an Oscar performance.

I must remember to stock up on tissues now that Mr D is in the dock. Well literally okay?

Oh yes, he is in the Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital and he will be starring on May 11, you say?

I have being scrolling the papers and online sites since Oscar took the stand and Shrien landed in SA and I noticed that everything else, including elections in the world's largest democracy,India, seem to have been eclipsed by the Oscar v Shrien contest of who can boost the flagging circulation of our printed media.

Let aside the fact we have some 25 days, and counting down, to go when we go to vote on May 7.

I am sure Mr Zuma and his peripatetic team of ANC campaigners expressed a sigh of relief as they welcomed the distraction.

And just imagine that Zwelimviva Vavi's suspension as secretary-general has been set aside by the Gauteng High Court and,a double whammy when the ANC lost the sms battle, wherein Helen Zille or the DA (is there a difference?) called Zuma a thief, in that same court.

Erm.....did I hear that the ANC is appealing against that decision of the High Court? Its their right. Who knows how another court will look at the matter. Good luck to the ANC by the way.

Yes, KT, you are right. We must marshall our passions and minds and channel them on who is deserving of our vote on May 7.

What is the other important bit of news that made the editorials but not the front pages of our circulation starving printed media that needs to be mentioned KT? Oh the fact that SA is no longer Africa's largest economy. Yes, fancy that. Why should we be surprised? Nigeria is Africa's largest oil exporter and, yes you are right it does not have labour laws that are counter-productive. Corruption contest? Well if we don't do something, then, in all likelihood SA will slowly overhaul Nigeria on that front and so maybe in a decade or so SA will become a leader again ?

Interesting observation KT. That is another reason why you and I and everyone reading this should vote on May 7 and become active citizens thereafter like those in the rural areas and townships demanding service delivery.

Don't forget KT to make submissions to the Parliamentary Portfolio committee regarding those EEA regulations that effectively exclude SAfrIndians and Coloureds from promotions in upper and middle management positions if those regulations do become law.

Do you still need convincing why you should vote? Just as Dina Pule was forced to withdraw her candidature on the ANC list for parliament because of intense public lobbying and pressure as,Obama says yes we can do it.

Oh , don't worry Shrien is in good hands despite what his spin doctors tried to paint about the state of our mental health facilities and justice system.

It is almost magrib time and its time to pay my dues to Allah, so As Salaamu Alaikum warakmatulahi wa barkatahu (peace and bessings of Allah)be your reward KT as well as the reward of every South African. We don't need circuses like the Romans used to provide to mask the grime and corrupt politicians ruining a magnificent empire, so focus KT, focus on the prize..........to become true and meaningful beneficiaries under the Constitution of South Africa.
