Meyer's new messiah

Heyneke Meyer’s announcement of his 22 man match day squad to play against Australia was not without controversy. In a move that sent shocks waves through parts of Polokwane a Free State flyhalf was paraded as the new messiah of Springbok rugby at the Pretoria press conference.

Press the rewind button to get Morne back...

Meyer’s boot seemed to be slightly more effective than Steyn’s at present as Steyn was booted straight out the 22 and into touch with little chance of a quick throw in any time soon. The usual words accompanying such a bold move were mumbled by Coach Meyer during the presser. There was talk about it being the right move for the individual and the team. Steyn couldn't be reached for immediate comment but I'll go out on a limb and say he would perhaps disagree. Meyer also insisted that Steyn had played a lot of rugby lately. Murmurs were heard from the back benches asking for if it was indeed ‘rugby’ that Steyn had been playing recently as it looked more like what one would find at the back end of horse.

'Hold up Morne, you left something!'

Goosen does look a solid prospect at 10 but there are doubts in some corners over his lack of experience at this level. Ex-Springbok coach Rudolph Straeuli for one was quoted as saying his logical next step after the Cheetahs should have been to play Sharks representative rugby before moving onto the international stage. Naka Drotske had to be restrained shortly afterwards.

When asked what Goosen brings to the party, Meyer replied that it was certainly not alcohol as that was illegal for a boy of his age, but he did possess an all round game.

Quite what Morne Steyn will get up to now remains somewhat of a mystery. There has been some talk that he might be forced to man the other end of Heyneke’s walkie talkie for the remainder of The Rugby Championship. It remains debatable in some parts of Tswane if this should be eyed as a promotion or demotion. Reports that Goosen was seen leaving the press conference on a donkey, with eager pressmen throwing Jacaranda fronds at the ass’ feet appear at first to be unfounded.
