Middle East: “Big Game”

2014-10-16 18:18

I write this article after physically witnessing disturbing acts of anger and violence in many Turkish cities.

The supposed inaction in Kobani, a strategic border town, by the Turkish government,  is frustrating and reviving an uprising by the Kurds living inside Turkey.

But the Turkish government is adopting a very cautious route and is simply choosing to remain out of the quagmire or conflict for various reasons. The Turkish government believes in an overall strategy that focuses not only on destroying the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS/ ISIL) but the approach should also include plans to remove Syrian dictator Bashar Assad from power.

After speaking to the locals on the border towns between Turkey and Syria, I believe many of the foot soldiers of the notorious ISIS are misguided and brain washed youth, lured by ISIS via social media, the web and effective propaganda. Also by using the correct terminology, quotations and emotive language many youth, especially in the Middle East, are joining the ranks of the ISIS or are their sympathisers.

Fiery speeches by some hard-line and misguided clerics on freeing Muslim countries from foreign control and the foreign policies of some western countries has in many ways facilitated to create the pool from which ISIS is effectively enlisting its members.

The leadership of ISIS are mainly unknown and many question the origin of ISIS. Who is “Caliph” Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, whose full name is Ibrahim bin Awad bin Ibrahim bin Ali bin Mohammed Al-Badri Al-Qurashi Al-Hashimi Al-Husseini? What is his family’s history or back ground? What criteria was used to choose him for this position? How is it possible for ISIS, in the space of a few months, to become so powerful? Where are they getting their weapons from? These are some of the questions many of the locals are asking.

Most conscious driven individuals and main stream scholars do not endorse ISIS’s activities.

The Majlis al-Islam al-Suri, Rabita Ulama al Sham and many others have issued verdicts and rulings against ISIS or Da’esh. The ISIS or ISIL and al Baghdadi have no support whatsoever among Muslims and their mainstream scholars.

ISIS or ISIL is not an Islamic state and their so called Caliph’s self-proclamation is deceptive and ridiculous.

A big game is being played out in the Middle East between the United States of America, Britain, France, Russia, the Arab states and Turkey. The sad reality is that while the super powers and world leaders are playing their chess game, thousands of ordinary people are being killed and are suffering uncountable misery.

Added to the “big game” plan, religious, sectarian, ethnic and class issues are helping to faster disintegrate the Middle East.

Why is Russia so silent on these latest developments on the Turkish/ Syrian border? Why is the United Nations Security Council not putting the issues raised by Turkey about creating a buffer zone between Turkey and Syria on their agenda? Why is the UN not sending in ground troops to save Kobani?

A comprehensive and holistic regional approach is needed to end the “big game”. The regional countries must unite to resolve their common challenges.

The solution is not military intervention by foreign governments or the so-called Jihadist movements but the well-functioning and collaboration among the regional countries.
