Mothers more woman than these models

Choosing a relevant topic to write my first article was a bit challenging since for the past few years I mainly wrote letters to the editor.

My mind wondered around different topics and ideas. Shall I write on racist tweets by Jessica Leandra and Tshidi Thaana? Shall I write about Obama backs gay marriages? Shall I write about the controversial e-tolling project? Shall I write about the recent death of Minister Roy Padayachie? After all the deliberation I decided that since Mothers Day is on Sunday I should focus on it. “AAH MY MOTHER”.

Mothers truly are the most self-sacrificing and noble beings created, but unfortunately the least noticed and underappreciated.

I lost my honourable and beloved mother to diabetes and other related complications a few years ago. But this noble lady is always in my thoughts.

This self sacrificing and hard working woman was not only my mother, but my friend, mentor, comrade and guide.

My mother always reminded me of the importance of a mother whenever I flexed my weak muscles or raised my eyebrows in front of her when requested to do a minor errand.

Often being bombarded with global news regarding sports, financials, politics and the never ending violence and crime we tend to forget the ordinary people like our mothers and fathers. Moreover, our careers and jobs take us to distant places leaving behind important individuals that have made very real, significant and meaningful contributions to our lives.

Being obedient to parents should not be confined to just a specific time of the year. Kindness, respect, expressing love and being of service to parents are a responsibility that should be observed every day and not just only on mother’s day. Mother’s Day should just reinforce the importance of mothers and remind us of being consistent in our duties towards them.

The mother carries the unborn child in her womb by enduring strain and discomfort. At the time of delivery or birth, she is overwhelmed with pain, tears and soreness. After child birth, the mother breast feeds and looks after the child with enormous and true love, determination, sincerity, patience and kindness, regardless of the strain and hard labour that accompany such a task.

For all the sleepless nights, heartache, aching bodies and wrinkles that we cost, we consider a bunch of roses and a box of chocolates to be an appropriate repayment. The only compensation is tender loving care, quality time and company and prayers. Let’s not just commercialise this day but transform it into a day of reflection and a life altering day.

Every opportunity to express gratitude to our mothers and fathers and those that helped shape our lives should be seized and valued. This is how we should think about Mother’s Day.
