My Dream Boxing Matches for South African Boxers

2015-01-01 13:41

2015 is promising to be a great sporting year for South African sports. The South African cricket team  is already chanting "Protea Fire" as they gear the nation for the ICC Cricket World Cup Down Under. The hope of the nation is that finally we can undo the famous rain delay score board, where the rain rule denied South Africa making it into the finals in 1992. The rugby national team is looking to follow up the lacklustre 2014 North hemisphere tour with another Northern hemisphere win in September in London. But before all that the national Soccer team gets to compete in a group of death in this month African Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.

In the Sport of boxing, national pride is carried on the shoulders of an individual and its up to the pugilist to carry the pride of the nation. With everyone in the World salivating over the possible match-up of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao or the possible matchups should Showtime and HBO fail to secure an agreement. i.e Mayweather-Cotto 2, Pacquiao-Khan, Canelo-Pacquiao even the now seemingly unlikely May 2nd matchup, Cotto vs Canelo.

South African boxing is on the up again and the new stars of the fighting game are matching and beating what the world has to offer. Here is a quick scan of the South African Boxing landscape and some of the matchups by South African Boxers in 2014.

Thabiso  "Rock" Mchunu

Not since the day of Thulani "Sugar boy" Malinga have we had such excitement in the middle to light heavyweight space.  The Rock is a cruiserweight contender fighting out of the South Paw stand, although being right handed. The story goes that the boxing talent, modelled his fighting style to his father who is left handed. The result has been a solid defensive boxing style with a solid right jab and right hook. This should by no means undermine the power he packs in his left.  In 2013  he was introduced in style to the American TV viewing public, when he outclassed a highly ranked Heavyweight contender Eddie Chambers. It was not his punching power, nor his speed that had the world in a frenzy but his boxing skills. He mixed it with a bigger heavy hitting guy and totally out classed  him.

Thabiso has a tricky year in 2015, In March he is scheduled to fight in Russia in a WBC Cruiserweight Title eliminator against another African sensation Ilunga Makabu from Congo. Both fighters are 17 (16  wins and 1 loss) with Makabu winning all his bouts inside a distance and Mchunu with 11 KOs. The winner of the bout will face the WBC cruiserweight champion , which will be the winner of the Grigory Drozd and Krzysztof Wlodarczyk rematch. Thus in 2015, the Rock faces two dream fights, that will deliver the WBC Cruiserweight title to South Africa for the first time.

Zolani "Last Born" Tete

Zolani is also another South Paw and the current IBF Flyweight World Champion. He is tough contender that has survived a lot of boxing lows though out his Career.  His most noticeable set back being a period of inactivity due to collapsing in training to epileptic fits. He has since then gone on to surprise the world winning a World title this year in July by defeating Teiru Kinoshita in front of a partisan crowd in Japan. Zolani has a date with an undefeated UK sensation Paul Butler in March 26. He is going to have to carry the flag against the crowd in Liverpool where the fight is taking place. My dream bout for Tete in 2015 is a unification match with the undefeated (30-0) WBC Mexican Champion Carlos Cuadras, hopefully on a huge undercut of an HBO or Showtime bout to reposition SA boxing in the world.

Chris "The Heat" Van Heerden

Chris has become the envy of most South African boxers, after announcing that he was joining Freddie Roach stable in California, USA. He trained by perhaps one of the games biggest coach. Freddie Roach is responsible for boxing greats such as Manny Paquiao, Miguel Cotto. Freddie is the 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 & 2013 Boxing Writers Association of America Trainer of the Year. In January 9th, Chris is fighting on the undercut of Dusty “The Beltway Boriqua” Hernandez-Harrison  vs. Tommy “The Razor” Rainone with Cecil McCalla for the vacant IBF International welterweight title. The fight is taking place in the theatre of Dreams, Madison Square Garden Theatre, in New York, USA. Welterweight division is the most talented division in World boxing with Mayweather, and Pacquiao being world champions. However if the IBF champion Karl Brook takes the Amir Khan in Wembley as proposed, my dream matchup for Chris is him fighting the winner in 2015. He is tough enough to upset them.

 Hekkie "The Hexecutioner" Budler

Hekkie is the South Africa's 2014 Boxer of the year. As Small men of boxing goes, in the World there is no one more talented than The Hexecutioner. He is the Unified WBA and IBO world Champion with a successful  2014, where he has made Monte Carlo, Monaco his happy hunting ground. On February 1st,  Hekkie is defending his two titles against Jesus Silvestre  of Mexico in Monaco. Of all fights, this bout is most likely to be televised as its promoters have a great working relationship with Supersport.
