My New SA Hero - Pali Lehohla!

Pali Lehohla - SA Statistician-General

For some of you, the name Pali Lehohla, may not sound familiar at all ... but what if I said to you "he’s the guy, who we often see on TV, who wears those bright yellow suits?"

Yes, that's Pali Lehohla, SA's Statistician-General, and my new SA hero!

Why, you may ask, is Pali Lehohla my new SA hero?

Well, it's because I believe that he's fulfilling a very constructive role in our relatively new democracy, by doing things that his predecessors never ever did!

Pali’s going out of his way to inform the public about SA’s key statistics and, very importantly, he's also interpreting these statistics for us ... and, hopefully, “us” includes our country's political leaders!!

I must say, Pali certainly appears to be a very personable man, and clearly has a very sharp intellect!

He usually addresses his audience with a very knowing smile when describing the stat’s but, most importantly, he always "tells it like it is" … unlike our national broadcaster, the SABC, which appears to have recently adopted a policy of restricting (censoring) what we see/hear!

In recent months Pali's had the difficult task of having to advise us of some very "negative" statistics.

In April, he told us of the marked decline in Black educational achievement (as opposed to the recorded improvement in White, Indian, and Coloured educational achievement), and the negative effect that this was having on Black advancement (in business/the professions), and therefore on Black unemployment.

But, very importantly, Pali also put forward his views as to WHY this was happening.

Only last week he was telling us the bad news of SA’s recent increase in its level of unemployment, but he didn't just tell us that - he elaborated on it and gave us his views as to how to improve our unemployment position.

There're no "sacred cows" with Pali, and that's what I really admire about him!

When I see him, in that bright yellow suit, communicating statistical information in easy-to-understand English, I wonder to myself: "I really do hope that our political leaders are paying attention to this, because he's clearly spelling out what we need to do to solve the problems that we're currently experiencing!"

In my opinion, our Public Protector, Thuli Modensela has, to date, been our (post-1994) Nation's number one saviour - but I believe that Pali Lehohla is up there too, right behind Thuli.

Keep up the good work, Pali!
