My vote for South Africa!

2014-05-14 08:03

I recently had the opportunity to travel from Gauteng to the Western Cape via the Northern Cape.

Most of my family and friends live in the Western Cape so I do this from time to time. We usually sleep over somewhere in the Northern Cape. Our favourite place to spend the night is a place called Meltonwold, a guest farm. It has this old world charm and they serve the most delicious Karoo lamb.

Every time we travel there and back I am overwhelmed by the beauty of our country. The landscape changes continuously, never a dull moment. The Karoo with its open spaces and picturesque mountains in the distance. Away from all the noise and hustle and bustle of the city, it allows for a gentle catharsis before literally moving onto greener pastures. The Olifants River Valley with its vineyards and Maskam mountains. Then areas like Citrusdal, Malmesbury and of course the mountains around Paarl, Franschoek Stellenbosch and Somerset West. The cherry on the cake Table Mountain of course – there is just nothing like it. Real mountains, if you know what I’m saying.

I am also overwhelmed by the poverty of our people. Look I don’t see myself as rich but I think I have the basics you know: I can read and write, I think I have a chance.

I am tired of the corruption and mismanagement of funds and I suspect I am not alone in this. When will South Africa get a Government that is guided by one and one principle only namely to act in the best interests of its citizens? Is it impossible to be in power and act with integrity?

Nevertheless I voted on Wednesday, 7 May 2014. I did so because I actually believe in this country and its people. This is despite the huge issues we face on a daily basis, a lot of them our own creations. I voted for, wait I think I’d rather not say.

I felt I wanted to use my vote as an expression of hope that we will once more turn the situation around. Would it not be awesome if people like:

• The children in the Karoo who see every arriving vehicle as a potential source of food and/or money, will get an education and get off the streets?

• The farm worker ploughing the fields, will be able to send his children to university?

• The lady selling roosterkoek (bread prepared over coals) in Lainsburg just opposite the Ultra City will start her own bakery?

• The guy who brought me firewood in Eland’s Bay for ‘’n stukkie vir die maag’ (something to eat) will find permanent employment?

• The lady who served us at Isabellas in Lambert’s Bay will one day start her own restaurant?

• Johan who walked with and helped me to buy fresh snoek in Lambert’s Bay will recover from his illness so he can work again?

• The guy who plays on his guitar at the Waterfront will get a record deal?

• The car guard at Monument Park shopping centre who tells me that he took home a lot of money over Christmas will one day have his own business?

• The guy at the corner of Garsfontein and Lois streets (not robot, that’s something else) who tells me he only needs R2 to buy x,y and z -will find a job?

Yes I think so. And I think I’m going to declare my vote after all. I voted for South Africa!
