Nelson Mandela belong to the ANC first.

2013-12-08 20:24

We knew the day will come, yet we wished it won’t come and we all still can’t believe that Nelson Mandela left us. When announcing his passing, Jacob Zuma said South Africa has lost its greatest son.

Increasingly, social networks and media reports are lambasting the ANC accusing it of politicking with Mandela’s name. Some even say we should not politicize his death as if was a Pope.

It is indeed unquestionable that Mandela belonged to all South Africans and the world. But let’s not forget, he belonged to the ANC first before he belonged to the World and everyone.

He belonged to the ANC when he started to attend ANC meetings at the age of 23, joining it in 1944.

He belonged to the ANC when he led the Defiance Campaigns in 1952; when he got arrested and charged for violating the Suppression of Communist Act, he was arrested as an ANC member along with J.S Moroka, Walter Sisulu and others.

Nelson Mandela belonged to the ANC when he watched in the side-lines the launch of the Freedom Charter because the apartheid police blocked him from attending.

He belonged to the ANC when they went underground for Umkhonto WeSizwe training.

Mandela belonged to the ANC when he was charged for treason. When he stood on the docks, and said his famous

"I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons will live together in harmony with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for, and to see realised. But my Lord, if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die."

He was a member of the ANC, about to be convicted because of his involvement in the ANC.

He was a belonged to the ANC when he was labelled a terrorist by not only the South African government but by also countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. He was listed as an “ANC terrorist”; then he did not belong to those countries they hated him and his politics.

So don’t accuse the ANC of cheap electioneering and politicking for celebrating the life of a man who dedicated his life to the ANC.

There are things that some people don’t want or fail to understand because of their dislike for the ANC.

You cannot separate Mandela from the ANC, without the ANC, the world would have never known Mandela. The world knew him through the ANC but the ANC was not known through him.

Writing a letter to Jacob Zuma, Thabo Mbeki said

In the context of the global struggle for the release of political prisoners in our country, our movement took a deliberate decision to profile Nelson Mandela as the representative personality of these prisoners, and therefore to use his personal political biography, including the persecution of his then wife, Winnie Mandela, dramatically to present to the world and the South African community the brutality of the apartheid.

Without the ANC, Nelson Mandela would have been another wise lawyer from the rural Bantustan of Eastern Cape.  We owe thanks to the ANC for introducing us to such a man.

ANC members have all the rights in the world to camp, hold night vigils and pray for Nelson Mandela outside Mandela’s homes, in Gauteng and Eastern Cape.

Now that Mandela has left us, ANC members and supporters will all stand up and bid farewell to their leader.

They will wear ANC T-shirts, fly ANC flags and posters. These will have ANC’s leader faces on them; they will have Mandela, they will have Thabo Mbeki and they will have the current president Jacob Zuma. And all will be written VOTE ANC.

Reporters will have to understand that Nelson Mandela was not a neutral or an apolitical person. He was an ANC member who was still in its NEC list.

He endorsed Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma, attended their inaugurations and first State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Throughout his life Nelson Mandela, has worked tirelessly for the ANC. it was him who said that when he goes to heaven; he will look for the nearest ANC branch.

Like Makaziwe his daughter said on a SABC interview; people and political parties must stop interpreting Nelson Mandela for their own interests. The ANC does not claim ownership of him; but its history claims him.

If Nelson Mandela could hear and see ANC supporters singing and making noise celebrating his life, he would probably tell them to sing louder.

If he would read that they’re accused of electioneering; he would tell them to up the notch a bit.
