2014-08-06 10:47

According to an article the KwaZulu-Natal’s health department is battling a birth control bombshell after insisting women students chosen to study pharmacy in India be injected with contraceptives. (News24, July 30).

Forced sterilization or birth control is un-acceptable in a democratic society. One cannot sterilize people against their will.

This practise is despotic and archaic. In a country like South Africa, that boasts one of the most progressive and liberal constitutions in the world, allowing such medical practise is horrifying.

The government or health professionals cannot use their individual judgment or choice to alter the biological function of a woman without her consent.

Forced and strong-armed sterilization or birth control is a serious violation of human rights and medical ethics and can be described as inhuman and a degrading treatment.

Powerfully ending a woman’s reproductive ability may lead to lifelong grief and other social and emotional problems.

Many obstetricians and gynaecologists believe that pregnancy keeps the balance of vital processes in women’s bodies. Thus, preventing it altogether is a form of challenging nature’s course from maintain this balance.

Every conscious driven individual, religious organisations and other civic bodies should oppose forced sterilization programmes in the strongest possible terms and afford every South African woman the choice to take total ownership of her own body. This barbaric practice of forced sterilizations cannot be allowed.
