Not so uniform

2012-02-22 06:50

A 10-year-old girl was apparently made to strip down to her panties, at a Joburg school on Tuesday and made to remain at school for the rest of the day wearing a school shirt and jersey. And why? Because she wore trousers to school.

Oh the shock and horror of it! Can you imagine? Wearing grey school pants instead of your gymslip or skirt. Gosh, that’s going to impede the learning process for sure.

The school principal denies the allegations, saying that she was one of 70 pupils who wore the incorrect uniform, and she was merely made to stand under the car port at the school, until break time at 10:00......it’s the usual punishment for uniform infringements at the school apparently......So based on the assumption most schools start at 07:30/08:00, that’s at least two hours of wasted learning time.

And by goodness, that’ll show them! Nothing like a good old dose of humiliation. Strip them or send them to a naughty corner to think about how not wearing the right uniform will impact on their lives.

God forbid uniforms need to be washed, don’t dry in time, or hell, that parents don’t have the money to afford a few extra sets of said uniform.

Surely with our education system rapidly going down the you know what (I’ve recently been told to watch my language, so I won’t say it out loud, but you can fill in the gaps with whatever profanity tickles your fancy), there are more important issues than children wearing the wrong uniform for goodness sake.

And I am assuming if you’re of the “well, it’s about discipline, tradition, etc” school of thought, then you’re probably in a position to afford a few extra sets. Blazer and tunic – tick. Tunic on its own in summer – tick. Tunic, jersey and blazer – tick. But god forbid you wear the jersey and tunic sans blazer....straight to the principal’s office for you.....that’s private school uniform etiquette for you.

But if as a parent all you’re after that the end of the day is a decent education for your child, or that there’s school lunch forthcoming, why the hell should it matter whether your child wears school pants – long or short; a gymslip or a bloody skirt?

Apart from being incredibly humiliating for the child, it’s a spectacular waste of time. Buck up. Worry about what’s really derailing our education system.

p.s. By the way, the mother of the child in question says her skirt was wet following rain the previous day.

Serious transgression here if you ask me......
