Open Letter to the President’s Neighbour

2014-01-27 11:24

Fellow Citizen

Allow me to state from the onset that I am not affiliated to any political party, nor am I writing on behalf of individuals whose interests may be inclined to favour those of a particular organization.

I believe, without doubt, that you ought to be commended for your bravery and courage in the midst of what somehow appeared to be sheer political intolerance following your decision to secure yourself a better life. Given the circumstances (socio-economic and political), I worry about the prospects of this letter finding its way to you, and that should it manage to overcome the obstacles that be, you shall find it worth engaging, considering and reflecting upon.

I write to you because I realize how significant the controversy around the refurbishment of your property in Nkandla is, and how it requires us to re-examine the delicacy of our young democracy without exception to the sad and wretched reality it presents before us; that the poor continue to suffer at the feet of the masters in whom they have bestowed their trust and loyalty, but above all, their being. I say at “the feet of the masters” because it is only in a world governed by greed and crass materialism that it would be right in the face of the ruler to have a multi-million rand property next-door to a match-box house that is in nothing but an awful and appalling condition.

What I find extremely disturbing, is the audacity of the people whose struggle is not different from yours to subject you to attacks in defence of a government that has undermined your right and the rights of many others to quality shelter. Furthermore, the indecency of your own people to disregard your stance for a better life in favour of a President whose multi-million rand homestead is under intense investigation and at the centre of public outrage. Your bravery reminds us that beyond the electioneering, political grandstanding and petty politicking, exists a woman whose dignity was restored and a desire to have a decent house fulfilled.

I am in no position to argue for/against the political party responsible for the renovations on your house, nor am I in a position to accuse you of having allowed yourself to be used as carrot to score political points. With that said, it is important to note that your case is no exception. There are thousands who wake up to such inconsiderate and callous realities everyday, where the political elite distances itself from and ignores the plight of our people, while enriching itself at the expense of the very masses it once was part of.

As such, I have deliberately chosen to dismiss the reports about you not having been honest about your economic status. If anything, your decision to accept that house has opened our eyes to new and fresh perspectives. May your bravery inspire many others!
