Our hatred will see Africans from other countries spit in our face

Bonang loves Lagos, in Nigeria. I suggest she be very careful next time she wants to go for a jaunt there where she was most welcome and treated like a Princess.

In fact, I suggest all of us be careful when we want to go for work assignments or vacationing in any African country - Tanzania's beautiful beaches on the Zanzibar, Zimbabwe's mesmerising Victoria Falls, stunning heavenly beaches of Mozambique, the amazing thousands of years old pyramids of Giza in biblical Egypt.

In fact the Jesus you pray to, my brother and you my sister, is from Egypt - so you pray to and praise a foreigner yet attack another foreigner because they are all criminals merely for being foreigners? We have worse criminals of body contact who are citizens of South Africa who rape and murder and hijack yet you hesitate to protest for that especially with the violence that you unleash on targeted foreign nationals.

Let illegal immigrants be dealt with by the SAPS and for the Department of Home Affairs to deport the illegal ones – even for that department to do so without rendition. If these fail and then of course let’s protest en masse but without labeling, name-calling and the violence where you are not even defending yourself but assaulting or looting. The looting part, haikhona! Ask nicely they might give it to you.

These are just thoughts and I can go as far as guessing that, like me, you might be carrying foreign blood. Because you are just an African who happens to live in the South tip of this beautiful continent that has been abused by former colonial masters, apartheid regimes and dictators. Direct you anger at those ills and their lifelong effects.

Perhaps with the violence of the past few weeks, especially last week, just hope that you don't or your family and friends don't have to go to other African or overseas countries where they will be foreigners too. Because it will be remembered that South Africans attacked other foreigners instead of treating them with universal human dignity protected by inalienable human rights. They will not attack you with a machete because like you, they are not savages, but they may make you feel either welcome or very unwelcome and so uncomfortable that conducting your daily business in their country will seem fruitless.

Criminals are criminals because they commit crimes. Not because they come from another country. Teach your child that. Because I suspect your kids may have a desire and an opportunity to go study in a foreign country where they shouldn’t be stereotyped as criminals. Let’s put that energy to good and beneficial use.

My brother, rather go and collect that R2.25 billion from Absa and all the collusion money and its interest from the criminal banks that robbed the SA government and the consumer through price-fixing the forex, ultimately undervaluing the Rand for many years - the results of which are still felt today and will continue to undermine our economy and the creation of jobs for many more years. These are jobs that are so needed in order that our unemployed and inadequately-employed youth can march for reasonable causes that are based on facts and acquire decent living wages. So that, in fact, we get full stomachs so we genuinely march and demand real socio-economic radical transformation.

Like Bonang, trust me, you will want to visit a beautiful country like Nigeria some day so let's not be shortsighted by temporary gains, which are in fact abuses and losses.
