Overweight and getting looks at the gym!

New Year’s resolutions don’t work for me.

All those, I want to read more, lose 15k by September 2015 –nope, that doesn’t do it for me. However, what does work is having set goals which I want to achieve; perhaps in a year or in the next 5 years. That is who I am. So in light of my 5 year  goals - I recently decided to take control of my lifestyle, health-wise (hahaha sounds so dramatic). Let me put it this way; I have decided to live a healthier lifestyle by incorporating workout sessions and a more balanced eating regime (with a slight nudge from my Doctor of course).

I am an overweight lady – who recently turned #TheBigThreeO. A  visit to my Doctor – early this year, left me feeling shocked that I was a walking corpse. According to my Doc I had to look after my health as in yesterday – I had to start getting active and watch what I eat. He explained that the older one gets the more susceptible you  are to chronic disease especially if you are over-weight/obese.

So the doctor ended up reiterating all the thoughts I had, as I could feel myself getting heavier and heavier… finding it hard to go upstairs, developing aching joints. It was indeed time for me to take control and make healthier choices with eating and exercise. I joined the gym again for the 4th time since I was old enough to be a member (this time is different though – we hope). I was not attracted by some affordable deal – from the promotions table at the Mall. I didn’t join because a friend was joining (no peer pressure here). I went to the gym with a made up mind… a ready mind, saying:  I want to get healthy, I want to get lighter, I want to be more active.

So , I went on to join, the process was effortless. The first workout session was scheduled 2 days after I joined. I was excited yet scared, as this is a major decision mos. My day arrived I started on the treadmill and walked (as I was advised to start off slow). When I completed my 20min walk on the treadmill, I waited a bit on the treadmill to regain my balance, once I was stable – I got off and as  I looked around. All the ladies and gents at the gym were staring at me, as if they were disgusted by an overweight person sharing the same gym as them (the fit folk). As I walked to my next activity, I thought of some reasons why overweight / obese individuals get the ‘look’ at the gym. Is it perhaps that the overweight/obese  have no place in a gym – as they decided to let themselves get big, by eating too much and being inactive? Maybe if you are overweight, your punishment should be death (don’t do anything about it, it’s too late – just die from diabetes typa vibe).

Why am I getting these looks at my local gym? I almost feel discriminated against – as if I don’t belong. Or were the ‘looks’ –  ‘looks’ of admiration, I once heard that people admire over-weight people who are doing something about their weight. I was too annoyed to go up to the culprits giving me’ looks’ and confront them. Instead I chose to look inside and to deal with my inner demons. What if these individuals were not looking at me and they were merely looking around – the very same way I was looking around. What if I was judging them by point them out as judgmental individuals? Wait a minute…this is my personal journey – I am the one walking this road to a healthier / lighter me.

I felt so empowered that I was getting my act together and realised that it is my journey, it has nothing to do with anyone’s’ looks’. I must own my lifestyle change; it is all up to me. No more excuses about so called ’ looks ‘at the gym or ‘looks’ at the dinner table at a family gathering when you make a salad on the side instead of proverbial pap on the side.
