Pandora's Box: ANC Pitfalls

2016-04-06 13:23

Our democracy though young has been laid on unstable foundations and those that sit at the helm should have seen it coming. It has been two decades of failed attempts to inspire national unity.

Mandela came with the song of sport which temporarily did achieve unity in patriotism however the magic he carried to the grave with him. Mbeki tried to inspire an African Renaissance in his term, how could we ever forget “I am an African” as a country? Pity it soon became “I am recalled” and the “Eight Days in September” Chikane so beautifully describes which I can imagine inspired The Mbeki foundation to write letters in a attempts to re-write his legacy. From there Zuma the Untouchable (who at the time ‘Umshini Wam” enjoyed a firm grip on the tongues of South Africans) took over and what manifested is nothing but an ugly head of a tyrant who refuses to see the error of his ways.

Thabo Mbeki’s recalling was a step the ANC has had not thoroughly thought of. An agenda wilfully played along to by those who cry the ANC has fallen from grace. Polokwane and what unravelled played a huge role in making this achievable, however a step in the wrong direction when it comes to inspiring national unity. From the onset of Zuma’s leadership the ANC has been divided and due to The Pandora’s Box they opened by recalling Mbeki. This set a precedent within the party that an individual can be bigger than the organization. Furthermore that when dealing with internal politics one must have the media present. This led to numerous long serving members jumping ship and some crying foul at Provincial Elective conferences. This has not helped the image of the ANC more so when members are the ones preaching incompetence and corruption.

The Pitfalls of National Consciousness dramatically depicted by Fanon can be seen on the faces of many ANC members. Primarily the South African constitution was drafted by individuals intoxicated by the idea of independence they forgot they signed a deal with the devil. Thus South Africa is still a member of the Commonwealth, In short we are still in bed with our colonizers but we now call it trade. Understanding our history a lot was left out when it came to ushering a democratic country as the primary societal issues( group areas act reversal, service delivery and loss of income, wealth and resources) where put as something to solve in the distant future. Thus “The Rainbow Nation” was born, an incredible utopia which many have seen how nightmarish it can get (Marikana, Xenophobic Attacks).

The ANC with its willful narcissism has played along in blaming Apartheid and its legacy whilst knowing well that they are selling parts of the country to greed that has her face disguised as the Guptas. This allowed the ANC to use its narrative of land restitution as the promise land for black people a dystopia many have come to see.The students have challenged the current crop of leadership calling for their heads as they have successfully failed to be the liberation movement they once used to be. What used to be an organization praised for its commitment to equality and a just society, has now become the very kind of organization that people mobilize to fight against.

The ANC is its own worst enemy and now that the foundation of its existence is shaking many loyalists (not so loyal) are ready to cross teams and play for whiever side that is winning. Marthinus van schalkwyk proved the ANC is that welcoming surely those that abandon the ANC will be welcomed elsewhere. Zuma opened the Pandora's Box and the ANC watched as the good and the bad and Guptas took place right in their own playground. With The ANC under fire how long will they let Zuma come above their own existence. Only time will tell
