Paris: Callous disregard for human life

2015-11-14 19:54

The Paris terrorist’s attacks need to be condemned in the strongest possible terms. A human being cannot be a terrorist and a terrorist cannot be a human being. My thoughts are with the innocent people of France, the victims and their loved ones.

The horrific series of terrorist attacks throughout Paris have sent shockwaves across the world, correctly triggering condemnations from political and religious leaders.

Moulana Ihsaan Hendricks of the Muslim Judicial Council said “We condemn these senseless, violent and callous acts of aggression against innocent civilians. Unscrupulous barbaric acts of vengeance has no place in society. All efforts towards bringing lasting peace and good relations should be perused in order to ensure that revenge and tit for tat attacks do not become the order of the day.”

While unanimous and unequivocal condemnation of terrorist activities is necessary, the root causes of terrorism must also be addressed. Ritual condemnations or the blame game are not going to defeat terrorism; equality, human rights, human dignity and social justice will.

Counter-terrorism measures must not be used to place whole communities under suspicion, subject them to harassment because of acts committed by a few of their misguided members, nor must it be used as a pretext for the suppression of legitimate resistance and to justify violations of human rights or fundamental freedoms of people.

The brutality and bloodshed witnessed on the streets of Paris are a glaring reminder that terrorists will do anything to spread terror and destruction in the World.

According to different news outlets Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for these heinous terrorist attacks in various locations in the heart of Paris.

ISIS, with its deviant and un-Islamic values, is not a product of Islam, or of Muslims, it is a product of the ongoing destabilisation of the Middle East by the so called “war on terror.” It is also a formation and construction of some Western governments and Muslim regimes in the pursuit of geopolitical dominance and corporate profiteering and exploitation.

Moreover, the inexcusable and the dreadful terrorism attacks in Paris, could also, in part, be a retaliation to Western aggression and destruction over decades. Many sovereign countries in the Middle East have been invaded and occupied by the perpetrators of the so called “war on terror”, resulting in massacres and displacement of hundreds of thousands of people.

The good fight against terrorism, or when responding to acts of terrorism, must be led in accordance with the law and not outside the jurisdiction of law. The rule of law and important international treaties and organisations, such as the Charter of the United Nations, International Criminal Court (ICC), the United Nations Security Council, international covenants on human rights, and the Geneva Conventions for the protection of war victims, will only prove effective if implemented correctly and not selectively.
