Parliament- A Circus in our Midst!

2015-02-28 05:16

The past few weeks have been enlightening. South Africans and the rest of the world have gained a close look to what parliament should not be. Parliament is a showcase that should reflect political professionalism and dignity. It should be a place where politicians of all parties feel safe and secure, free to pose questions and argue against political unfairness. Furthermore it should enhance the view of our country as a place that tolerates diversity of opinions, promotes democracy and protects freedom. Parliament should be a place where politicians and specifically those in governing positions, should be open and willing to answer questions, be accountable and act with responsibility.

All of this is a huge contrast to what has happened lately. In our country the exact opposite is true. Not only have the ANC acted in a way that is everything, but admirable. They have also eroded the trust that the public puts in government to act in a responsible way. What’s even more appalling is that in light of the global image that our country is trying to promote, the rest of the world stood by and watched this spectacle. They defied the constitution, they undermined freedom of speech and they let us down! Not only did they act reprehensible when sending members of the security force to remove the EFF from parliament, but they behaved even more shocking when Helen Zille tried to deliver her speech. Are we becoming a banana republic? What’s coming next? Whereto from here? Do we have more catastrophes to look forward to? What is the solution?

Unless government starts to act in a responsible way, we have a long way to go! We need a government that can stand up for the principles of freedom, equality and democracy. We need leaders who can take responsibility for their actions. Responsibility for their actions? Yes indeed, for our president sang “The sounds of silence”, when he delivered his state-of-the-nation address. Where was his acknowledgement of what has happened? We needed to hear at least some sort of explanation.

We can’t go on like this! If we are to compete in the international arena, we need to adhere to international standards! Our country’s dignity and international image is at stake. I want to appeal to our leaders to start acting like leaders. We as the people voted in a certain way because we expected certain results. We are not seeing these results! We need to guard our constitution and its principles. We need to guard the dignity and international image of our country.

The past few weeks have been shocking! Unless things turn around for the better and start to improve, I’m afraid that we are heading for disaster! The message that is coming across from government is zero tolerance for anybody who has anything to say that the ANC does not like. All of this is playing itself out in parliament, the one place where politicians should act in a way that earns them respect and dignity. Parliament should be conducted in a way that builds toward a future where we as citizens are able to put trust in our leaders. Parliament should be associated with dignity, honourable conduct and the principles of our constitution.

Lately that has not happened! Lately parliament has become the fertile ground for the opposite. Lately parliament has turned into a spectacle. Yes, I am sorry to say, but the South African parliament is a circus in our midst! Let’s hope someone in government with political savvy, realizes this and moves towards something that can turn around what seems to be a collapse of our country’s dignity!
