Parliament drama: Dr Evil, Mini Me and Austin Powers

2015-02-17 06:39

Politicians are by and large skilled manipulators. They have always known how to put on a good show.

We should not believe for one moment that they are true critics of each other. Rather see it as just acting to appeal to our emotions and prejudices with the sole aim of winning us over to gain power.

In the process, they end up playing dirty tricks on each other and this nation. This is my brief interpretation of the comedy drama that unfolded in Parliament:

Mini Me (EFF): Dad, You don’t love me!

Dr Evil (ANC): Son, It is you who does not love me! (the dreaded laugh)

Austin Powers (DA): hah, hah, hah, I got you now Dr Evil!

The whole thing was outrageously boring. But we have to admit, this kind of soapbox theatrics will appeal to the unthinking masses. After all, they are conditioned to accept that brain dead participation through the mass media is a form of action.

The recent talk about the sanctity of parliament by experts is surely also an empty debate that only serves to legitimise these mythical structures.

The important question for the future is how to govern without politicians and their overly elaborate and outdated forms of organizing such as parliament.

Unfortunately, few scholars and citizens will pose this question. Why should they when they are being so well entertained?
