Proteas capitulate but can they bounce back?

2014-02-17 08:41

Oh well, there goes the series. Or maybe not?!

The Proteas were thoroughly outplayed by the Aussies in what turned out to be a thrashing for the 1 number ranked team in the world. In a three match test series, the first test match is the most important, and losing it puts one on a knife edge.

We have no excuses. It was a poor effort from the whole team except for Steyn and AB. The rest of the outfit was horrendous. We are the best test team in the world for goodness sake! True - even the best lose, but the least they could have done was shown some fight. Credit to the Aussies for a super performance, however.

It seems as if we had no plan at all. We looked like a bunch of blokes playing sunday cricket and hoping by the end of the day our team would win. The hallmark of the Protea team that ascended to the top of test cricket was their planning before and during tests matches. Every session was planned for, every opposing batsmen was studied and their weakness identified and a strategy was worked on to get them out. The same goes for our batsmen: every session had a target with a contingency plan in place in case we lost wickets. However, none of this was evident in Pretoria!

The Captain stated that "Obviously it's disappointing, we've been outplayed from the word go" but should that have even been allowed to happen Mr Smith? Should we not have expected that the Aussies will be at the top of their game after destroying England in the Ashes? I for one expect better from the Proteas, we are far better than the performance that we put out. Prior to the test Smith said "If you're the number one team in the world you have to be favourites, it's something we've become accustomed to and very comfortable with over a period of time. We've been number one in the world and travelled to some tough places to get it firstly and then to defend it."

We certainly didn't defend it at Centurion! But let us not wallow in defeat as the Biff put it "We were comprehensively beaten over the last four days and we've got to be man enough to admit to that and make no excuses. We've got to find a way to respond."

But will the Proteas respond? It is true - one does not become the best in world without having character! This Proteas team definitely has loads of it. They worked hard to earn their stripes and overcame a lot of tough situations in tough places to get where they are today. The question that needs answering, is whether four days are enough to recover? The Aussies seem to think so "They're a pretty professional mob, South Africa. That's why they're No.1. They'll work that out very quickly and train accordingly and get prepared for the next Test match." Lehmann said.

Yes, we are disappointed with the last match but that is due to us knowing that we are capable of much more. The price one pays for excellence is deafening criticism for anything mediocre.

Therefore it's time we show the world and those Aussies who they're dealing with! We are the Proteas - the best Test team in the world. Let's go back to basics and whip these pretenders to our throne.

To the millions of cricket fans out there let us also play our part, let us fill the stadiums and support our boys, let us be one with the team in defeat and in glory. Proteas we are behind you all the way.
