Proteas Rotation Policy

Arguably the best bowling trio in World cricket would be Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel. These 3 players have struck fear in many batting line-ups and throughout the past 3 or so years it has been evident that they work like clockwork when it comes to knocking opponents over. Although this is the case, over the past few test series, the bowling has not been at full strength albeit still putting in good performances.

One person in the bowling attack that has been very ineffective has been Vernon Philander. Now don't get me wrong, I am not calling for his head to be on the chopping block, I am simply just asking the question of whether or not it won't be a bad idea to rotate players. We have talent on the wings and I feel like we are not giving everyone a chance to prove themselves at test level. Marchant de Lange has been in great form lately and at the moment he seems like the strike bowler that needs to accompany Dale Steyn in our attack. Vernon Philander is class but maybe with a little competition he could recapture the form that once put him at the top of the World rankings ahead of compatriot Dale Steyn.

Morne Morkel has been doing a phenomenal job as the support bowler for Steyn and Philander. He has been regarded as one of the best support bowlers in the game, something a player like Stuart Clark used to do for the Australian bowling attack which included Brett Lee, Glen McGrath and Shane Warne.

A surprise package for South Africa (which can be argued as not being a surprise due to his great domestic form) has been Dane Piedt in his debut test against Zimbabwe. Yes, I know many people will be saying that it is against Zimbabwe but it still takes a lot of effort to bowl well away from home and in your debut test match to record 8 wickets. Imran Tahir for me does the job well at ODI level and Dane Piedt should hold down the Test spot. An interesting fact is that there are only 15 players in the history of the game who picked their first test stick/wicket from their first ball in test cricket, something Piedt has managed to do. Let me leave it there.

So my starting eleven ideally would not change much from the one that played Zimbabwe except that it would be great to have AB behind the Stumps and Quinton de Kock opening the batting with Dean Elgar. We can then bring in an extra batsman to extend our batting line up. I would also like to say that I didn't say we should drop anyone but I am sure you can do the math.
