Put an end to this odium, Minister Phiyega

2013-01-08 21:32

Dear Minister Phiyega, just before  I shut down for the night, I read online of yet another woman, someone's daughter  or sister has reportedly been gang raped on her way to register at the Tshwane University of Technology and I recall the uproar we raised when Jyothi Singh Pandey, a 23 year old medical student was gang raped in Delhi by 6 men who if convicted could face the death penalty.

We don't have the death penalty in South Africa, though righteous and indignant people clamour for its return. And though it is not the solution, I find it difficult to disagree for I see in their eyes a cauldron of anger that's going to blow sometimes soon.

But we, fathers, brothers and outraged citizens will not take this, pardon the pun, lying down. We have the capacity to occupy seats of government and to clamour that you publically step in and, as a public official do what we expect. Find the criminals who did this, after due process, lock them up for life without the benefit of a parole! As a man I am disgusted that this is happening in our country and government sending troops to the DRC! We need protection against vicious murderers strutting around with impunity!

We can never be free until we live our freedom and the right of everyone to go about their daily lives, without fear of sexual molestation!  There's so much poverty, so little incentive for young men to live with the dignity of being employed! There's so much discontent when honest, decent people  don't have jobs or a place they can call home.

When grandmothers in their 80s get raped, when children as young as 8 get raped, when decent law abiding citizens feel insecure and can't afford the personal security guards that you and members or government enjoy, very soon government will taste lawlessness in the form of vigilantism.

Whatever you do,Minister, don't talk.Get out there and get cracking for what you were appointed or face an angry nation fed up with crime and corruption gnawing away at the roots of our Constitution!
