Q&A WITH MRS SOUTH AFRICA FINALIST REEVANA GOVENDER

2017-05-27 20:45

  1. What made you enter Mrs. South Africa?

I entered Mrs. South Africa because I love what it stands for. It’s not a typical beauty pageant, it is a women empowerment program. And it allows women like myself, who are wives, mothers and career women the platform to make a difference. I hope to inspire other women and highlight the causes that are close to my heart.

  1. Why do you women empowerment platforms like these are important?

I think it’s important because empowered women are powerful beyond means and these platforms inspire us to empower ourselves, empower our sisters and our daughters. It gives us bona fide, real and relatable role models to look up to.

  1. We believe Mrs. South Africa has rebranded tell us more?

Yes, this year marked an exciting change in the branding of Mrs. South Africa embracing the spirit of Ubuntu and showcasing the real and relatable women of our country. Gone are the stereotypes that do not match the unique femininity of our South African women. It’s a beautiful change which emphasizes the real South African woman.

  1. What charity work are currently busy with?

As an optometrist, I want to raise awareness around preventable blindness in children. I am currently the brand ambassador for Bona Bolo Vision for Learning. This is an NPO focused on taking eye care facilities and spectacles to school going children in the peripheral areas of our country. Vision plays a critical role in the way a child perceives and learns about the world. Without being able to see these children aren't able to learn. The spectacles and vision therapy enables them to reach their full academic potential. My hope is that the Mrs. South Africa platform will help me to bring the much needed awareness to the cause. Another cause that I hold close is the Cancer Association of South Africa. Every single individual can agree that Cancer has touched their lives in some way. CANSA is the official charity for Mrs. South Africa and I will be hosting an event to raise funds for CANSA.

  1. How do you juggle being a mom, being an optometrist and still running a successful

campaign for Mrs. South Africa?

It can be difficult but I have the most amazing support structure and the most wonderful family. I also try to prioritize and write everything down in my diary. I set goals and work towards them. It’s also important not to strive for absolute perfection and to know that it’s okay to sometimes have a bad day. I once read about creating a work/life blend rather than a balance. To balance means to keep it separate but to blend means we see ourselves as a whole and integrated person, not as someone splintered into a million tiny pieces that must be kept isolated. This has helped me a lot.

  1. Why should South Africa choose you as their Mrs. South Africa 2018?

I feel like I have the ability to inspire the real South African woman, I am not perfect but I do my very best to live by my core values and be the best version of myself. I am real and relatable woman and every South African woman will be able to see a part of themselves in me. I want to be able to set an example to them to always strive for more and to be a woman who supports other women. I want to work with women to enable and empower them to see their full potential. Let’s lift each other up!

  1. What advice do you have for young women out there?

Never change who you are so people will like you, believe in yourself and the right people will love the real you.

  1. What is the one quote that you live by?

Here's to strong women . . may we know them, may we raise them and may we be them
