Quo vadis Addington?

2013-01-17 18:32

I get the sense that Addington Hospital, located on prime land along the golden mile in Durban is being pummeled and parcelled up bit by bit and that eventually it will be sold to some rich profit seeking entrepreneur who will level it to the ground and develop on that valuable real estate, condominiums for the super rich.

I want readers of my post to pause and reflect and recall that a few years ago a wealthy consortium was interested in the area where Addington Hospital is located and had declared its interest to buy the property!

Thus far many surgical wards have already been relocated to Wentworth as well as to St George for instance and, many health professionals have resigned in disgust at the manner in which the hospital is allowed to fall apart. Non health professionals have been placed in managerial positions, bureaucrats who do not understand and who fail to make decisions that benefit members of the public are running the hospital to ruin. In this way, the institution will be declared unsalvageable and closed down. Guess who wins?

A front page report "Major op for ailing Affington"(Mercury 17.1.2013) does not plumb the depth of the decay and subterfuge very shrewd politicians in the wallets of wealthy profiteers are plotting to seize the property for commercial gain! We need to come alive to the tragedy and the subterfuge politically connected people are resorting to! This is no less than trashing our constitutional rights.

With sub-standard facilities, shortage of medicine and equipment that is required to save lives and heal people gifted as well as dedicated doctors and nurses have been so demoralized that many of them resigned in disgust and the poor as usual end up losing !
