Race will always be an issue, unless...

South Africa is a nation in pain! It is a nation filled with guilt, condemnation, discrimination and regret over the past...

During the past few weeks and months there have been numerous incidents where the issue of race has come to the fore. Every time that this happens people get emotional. It’s as if we are stuck in a time-warp and are unable to move forward. Over and over there is heated debate on the issue of race. It always has the same consequence. It always ends up with people feeling that they have been treated unjustly and wrong.

While I don’t want to contest that the issue of race is important and needs to be treated with respect in this country, I do believe that South Africans have to take stock of where they are. It’s been 22 years since the birth of the rainbow nation and yet there is no rainbow. It seems that the rainbow has disappeared and all that we are left with clouds that built up to a storm over and over again.

We need to move on. Yes, South Africa is multiracial and multicultural. Of course race is an issue. However I think it is an issue that needs to be approached from a different angle. Instead of pointing fingers at each other, accusing each other of who knows what, we need to meet each other half way. Let’s start to try and understand why we are so hurt. Let’s try to look at each other from different points of view.

Can we heal? I believe we can. History has proved that people can survive despite adversity. However the road to healing is paved with certain building blocks, one of them being the ability to forgive… No matter what has happened, no matter how bad it was, we need to move forward. If we want to find the promise of the rainbow, we need to bury our tears which are like raindrops that disguise the sun.

If we want to see the sun and the rainbow which is filled with the promise of a better tomorrow, we need to clear our eyes. That is the only way that we will be able to see life from somebody else’s viewpoint.

We are a country with vast differences. The only way forward is to embrace our differences and kill our animosities. The only way to heal this nation is to find common ground and built on our strengths. Yes, the past has happened. Yes, it can never be wished away. However it is time to put it behind us. If we are serious about moving forward, this is the only way to go. We have to give it a try. If we don’t, we will never know...

We have a long way to go, but I believe a journey of a 1000 miles starts with the first step. Let’s take a step towards each other and learn to forgive. Unless we do, race will always be an issue…
