Racism has infiltrated our schools

2017-06-06 20:18

Racism in schools? We've lit the fuse and, someone said in anger, its probably a moment away from an explosion. When I read the paper about a racist rant in a leading Pietermaritzburg high school I realised like the AIDS virus its infected the young. Not a millennial especially. How could this happen?

So racism has descended to school level and this is when I  say, we have begun our descent into hate crimes of unimaginable levels. And this fills me with despair. Oh yes, racism is manifest in public schools also.

I do not buy into that ' she was under stress' bit that's posited as an explanation for those soul splintering words were not uttered in a vacuum. They lay dormant like a coiled venomous snake and something unleashed it. What? Who, Enter her parents, for its probable that such negative racist language has its own incubator and they must be shamed. Pardon the cliche but an apple seldom falls far from the tree. No person is born hating surely, to quote Nelson Mandela.Hate speech becomes the norm in a domestic environment when people engage in such a cluster mentality as a normal discourse.

So where to from here?  We must not hate back but rather whilst showing our distaste and disgust, we should rather be patient and calm for no doubt the Department of Education is on top of the problem. We have no choice for an eye for an eye leaves us all blind and destroys us all.

That hate rant is no different from Penny Sparrow and other vile racists nesting in sheltered enclaves of privilege and wealth. Someone has to pay according to the law but the sanction  must not only have a deterrent effect without a healing/ rehabilitative component.

I have been consistently writing that we need to talk and to act in concert with each other( as opposed to talking and acting past each other)  at an inter-personal level and really clear away the shards of glass that threaten to rip our fledgling country apart.
