RE: You have lost nothing to Apartheid

2014-10-22 02:29

Anyone younger than 40 will not get a free house from the government, says Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu.

"Anybody below the age of 40 will need to understand that they are not our priority unless they are special needs or are heads of child-headed households,”

"I don’t know of a country that gives free houses to young people. Free housing in a few years will be something of the past. You [the young people] have lost nothing [to apartheid].” Sisulu tells the youth.

I am not for the idea of people being handed out houses in a silver platter but I am disturbed when a minister addresses people in this like. I find it a bit arrogant. I believe no one dreams of handouts or a free house. I do not know where South Africans get the idea that those staying or who have received government housing are lazy. Given the right opportunity and skills they could also be able to buy their own house. Poverty is so real in South Africa and it is so easy for someone sitting in high pedestal to draw their own conclusions.

The problem does not start with housing but starts with a lack of opportunities and resources to some communities. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Yes we all know that giving people housing was never the perfect solution but a temporary win!

And yes we will always bring Nkandla to the table, it is so easy for ministers to say they don’t know any country that gives housing for free to the people yet none of them want to stand up for such truth when state resources are abused to build a president a home, a president who is in a better financial position than the ones wanting free housing.

It is funny how we don’t always address officials who are corrupt, people who take bribes to give people houses. Do we ever talk about those? No!!

To imply that people who receive free housing have no dignity is taking it too far if one does not even know why they don’t have housing.

Everyone’s journey is different when it comes to the apartheid whether they are black or white. To conclude that people have lost nothing to the apartheid is a bit arrogant. In reality there are people who benefited from apartheid  and their families, therefore the opposite is also true there are people who missed opportunities due to the apartheid government. They had dreams and ambitions too!!!
