Reflections on the Paris tragedy.Je suis Charlie? Really?

2015-01-10 07:11

Following on Rennie Naidoo's blogpiece  published on this  platform on January 7,2015 entitled "Paris attack confirm that religious belief  contributed to terrorism" permit me to respond with a diiferent perspective.

? I spent the three hours or so,during the power outage yesterday, January 9, 2015, reflecting on the news that those three barbarians were killed in a shoutout and the timeline events that led to that culmination.

But I will not subscribe to that hashtag 'jesuis charlie' for I am no charlie and to identify myself with that means I condone extremism. Yes, under the guise of freedom of expression extremists aka cartoonists sought to pour gunpowder over a simmering fire in racist France.

Je suis Charlie? If you are, good for you. I am not Charlie Hebdo period. I will not legitimise what it stands for.

Let me be clear on this.

Nothing - no cartoon, no book, no song – justifies the kind of shooting rampage that happened in Paris. I support what Hassen Chalghoumi, the imam of Drancy mosque in Paris said (in that “These are criminals, barbarians. They have sold their souls to hell.”

Lets be honest. Few media outlets would print a cartoon of  Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) crouched on all fours  genitals exposed or , for that matter that tend to show the "Father, Son and Holy Ghost' sodomising each other. For that matter, most will balk at a cartoon like one magazine Onion put out , a while ago as I recall  showing a Lord Ganesha, Jesus, Moses, and Budha all naked with erect phalluses having an orgy in the clouds. Its sickening. This can't be freedom of expression surely?

If you support that.............I am speechless.

So "Je suis Charlie" ? Really?

Those killed by the three barbarians did not deserve their fate. So I must reiterate what I posted yesterday on my FaceBook page for I am no charlie and I will not validate insanity with any show of support :

"What motivated those gunmen was their septic ideology against which even Muhammad (PBUH) would have expressed outrage and condemnation. Nowhere in the Quran or Hadith have I found any reaction from him even under extreme provocation at various times such as for example when a Jewish merchant who purchased dates from him demanded early delivery than that agreed and proceeded to verbally as well as physically abuse him."

The contemporaneous sirah (biography) of Muhammad (PBUH) is replete with evidence of the awesome restraint and tolerance he manifested throughout his tenure as prophet. Don't take my word for it. Read up about him independently of what others, including me, have to say. You will read how the dominant Quraish tribe in Mecca during his time, for instance, used to taunt him verbally composing poetry about him having no male heir for instance. They used to pelt him with stones and offals of animals and even place thorns to way lay him. Just as Charlie Hebdo cartoonists did. He never responded. Read up about him.Free yourself from the ignorant who continue to insult him and if you truly want to honour him, follow his example.

I would , however, invite you to delve into the ideological foundations of those three barbarians which is similar to what animates boko haram, isis, taliban etc , that are totally disconnected from that which Muhammad practiced and propagated.

I totally condemn all extremists/fanatics who spew nothing but hate either by word or by conduct or in any art form.

Je ne suis pas Charlie........
