#RhodesMustFall, Senyaka and DJ Sbu

The first story is a sad one. The exit of our national team from the ICC Cricket World Cup down under at the hands of our voodoo CWC side, New Zealand. The country has showered the team with heaps of praise and words of encouragement. This has really surprised me because it has completely gone against the norm when our national teams do badly. Usually we either blame the referee or we get angry and ridicule the team. The Proteas have won the hearts of a whole nation albeit their failure to win the elusive CWC trophy. A positive that I saw in the tournament for the Proteas was that we achieved something that had plagued our history in the tournament. We managed to win our first knock-out game and we can finally get that monkey off our back.

Funny man, Senyaka Kekana passed away this week much to the shock of the nation. His death however sparked debate over his supposed riches he accumulated over the years that he doesn’t seem to possess anymore. Now this could be that he was not careful with his finances or that he never actually accumulated that much. What is going on in the entertainment industry that leaves many of the talented artists with no penny after the pass?

More on entertainment, Zayn from One Direction has quit the band. This has angered many South African 1D fans because the band is scheduled to perform in South Africa in the coming weeks. Maybe the young man has been inspired by Justin Timberlake when he split from N’Sync and could well become a sensation on his own. With 1D going in different directions (see what I did there?), one wonders if a 4-man 1D will still keep going from strength to strength? Only time will tell.

Jack of all trades, DJ Sbu is in hot water with Forbes for faking a magazine cover to advertise his energy drink ‘Mo’Faya’. The well-known company that produces the magazine are planning to sue DJ Sbu with the Mo’Faya man retaliating that he will sue the company as well should they attack first. Many people usually photoshop themselves into magazine covers and never got sued or even got into trouble, is DJ Sbu really that special? Both parties are being ridiculous and it is not newsworthy, maybe meme worthy on ‘Black Twitter’.

#RhodesMustFall has been all over my timeline on twitter lately and it is an issue that many students across the country by storm. The UKZN students have also decided to paint over King George’s statue. I need to ask the question, would the UKZN students have protested had Rhodes been left to chill in his current location? As a student, I believe that we should address the more pressing issues first before we start shifting blame onto a statue. Don’t get me wrong, I sympathise and agree with the motion that statues that don’t provide a unifying factor should be taken down, statues like the Rhodes statue. Although, I still say that the Mandela Rhodes bursary should continue to serve the students of the country. The money belongs to the land and terminating it would be counterproductive.
