SA still without clean leadership

2013-11-21 05:59

I recently spent a weekend away with colleagues of mine. Any sensible person would know how severely exhausting and hopelessly challenging "extra time" with the "team" can be. Add to that the fact that I was without massive doses of single malt scotch and sure enough, the polarized political views of the company I was in became unbearable!

Most of my time was recovered by reading fascinating medical studies, which I found weirdly exciting! At least I now know that according to research conducted at the University of Montreal in Canada, exercise during pregnancy can boost the development of a baby's brain and an aspirin each night reduces the chance of morning heart-attack or stroke. I promise, I'm going somewhere with this...

It wasn't too soon till someone gratefully pronounced that the coming elections will offer many voters "the gift of choice". I must also highlight that it was at this point I begun writhing in my seat! I just couldn't understand it!

The argument went a bit like, "with the formation of so many new political parties (NINETEEN to be exact!!!), voters had more to choose from", then of course there was some confusing buffet analogy. Now I understand why anybody would think so, but since most people have never heard of the other new 17 parties, I'll only focus on two.

Agang is to me what my parent's marriage must be like to my older brothers. Seething with rhetoric and riddled with promises that you know will never amount to anything. The affair itself is spectacular! Great food, great speeches but an even greater disappointment. The good memories live on. Such as the historical announcement on Constitution Hill by Dr Mamphela Ramphele (ironically 4 days after Valentines, Ha!), which gave what can only be described as false hope to many and the bad ones too, like the R500m-R55m-Forbes episode!

Like many people have pointed out, nobody actually knows what they're about. It doesn't also help that the good Doctor has been cursed with an almost surreal, Utopia inspired idea of what politics is about. Yes I agree with her that corruption is rampant and accountability non-existent, it didn't take more than the faulty construction of the Tongaat Mall to remind me of its impact, but beyond that, what does she have to offer?

An instant twitter search spanning two days back and the terms 'DA' and 'stokvel' have been attached to Ramphele. Both unfairly so. I think stokvels know what they are working towards and the DA has a track record that reflects growth, I can't say the same about Agang (notice how Ramphele and Agang are so easily interchangeable? Another one of my qualms!).

Though each time Ramphele opens her mouth, I fall deeper in love with the Commander in Chief of the EFF. Cue outrage. Not necessarily because I agree with their ideology or policies, but one must always admire such growth. The EFF's populist propaganda is as empty as it is heroic but in the words of Alicia Keys, Love is blind!

The evidence that hints at the growing success of the EFF is constantly affirmed by the media coverage so cheaply won by its leader. This doesn't always translate to an outright majority win (as they are aiming for), but it does say: This is a lot you must watch out for.

What SA needs is not more parties to choose from. What we need are more leaders of sound character, crystal clear policy with the ability to reach out to complex communities. And it would be freakin' sweet -just for once- to not have candidates with criminal charges hanging over their heads on the ballot sheets!

Earlier this week Malema took some time out to take a piss on the ANC, COPE and the Public Protector. After what were clearly toe-curling comments, I was still left wondering if Juju's mother got to exercise much during her pregnancy...
