Save Mandela's Dream – A Prospect for Continued Impact

2013-12-18 03:55

The Nelson Mandela force represents the power of peace, happiness and human dignity that has been denied and continue to be denied to many people across the world. When we are talking about Nelson Mandela phenomenon we are talking about an open ended force for lasting change, peace and individual happiness. It is an idea that has its own feet and hands. It is not about political organizations and affiliations - yes that idea might have found expression and manifestation along the lines of a political organisation - but the idea is not the political organization - the idea is virgin and native in its own right.

Politics and the Nelson Mandela family are divided and divisive; both have lost the moral grip of the Nelson Mandela force. That is the only way to consider Mandela in the post Mandela world. It is not about politics and it is not about family as I have alluded in my previous post. Nelson Mandela force is a moral force that bent the yoke of history. And what are the prospect for continued impact since Nelson Mandela is gone?

It will take a unique different fresh perspective movement. Such a movement should find expression in varied ways.  The movement should raise awareness and push for change on pressing issues such as social, economic, racial, and environmental justice. This movement should be more than the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The Nelson Mandela Foundation functions more like a think tank.

Most think tanks are designed to inject ideas into the small community of elite opinion-makers, on the theory that this select group will both win reforms and shape the attitudes of millions of people across the world. Some might call this the “trickle-down” model of spreading ideas and having impact. It does sometimes work to advance some ideas and causes. But it has not proven sufficient enough for changing minds and moving ideas and values on a broad global scale in particular at the grassroots level.

The new movement might be called Save Mandela Dream should work alongside artists, poets, dancers, painters, and cartoonists to change hearts as well as minds. It should partner with celebrities and rock stars to popularize Nelson Mandela ideas; it should also use digital tools to make sure his virtues and principles catch on and transform lives for the better.

The Save Mandela Dream should find expressions through revivals. Revivals are appointed periods of excitement and fun way of spreading ideas. Just like Spring Day  on the first day of September every year, is used to provide awareness to the environment and nature's life giving power.

People are moved rarely by facts. We are living in a world where people can find facts on their own facts. The whole broadcasting of Nelson Mandela's funeral was focused on facts, facts about Nelson Mandela's life and so on . But facts are fickle and forgettable. So how should we share and diffuse Nelson Mandela values and principles? It will be by partnering with organizations sharing the vision. For example partnering with companies, organizations and individuals who share the principles of human dignity, peace and justice. In this way they can display a logo after their names that reads; Mandela affiliate.

And what is Nelson Mandela's dream I am talking about.  For me Nelson Mandela's dream is as follows: People who are willing to work hard and play by the rules should be able to live better lives in a peaceful community, be able to live with human dignity and respect, and give their children a better life. Nelson Mandela was about every one of us – rich, poor, or in-between, regardless of skin color or cultural background – everyone has the right to life, liberty, peace, human dignity and the pursuit of enjoyable life. That should be a covenant for all the people who are inspired by Nelson Mandela; it should be our compact, our contract with one another across the divide and across the world.

And how should this idea of a movement be taken forward? Biologists who have studied the collective intelligence of insect colonies, birds and fish provide the inspiration for human social phenomenon of swarms. Swarms are groups of people coming together in oneness and unity from diverse backgrounds - this is a coming together where no one is in charge and each individual is free to take action on her or his own following certain simple guidelines. In this way staggering complex situations can be mastered and benefit the collective when individuals are empowered in this way.
