Sex sells - but it shouldn't be sold to children...

2013-10-08 09:16

Remember a while ago I wrote about certain celebrities and how the example they set is abhorrent to parents of their young impressionable fans?

I happened to mention Miley Cyrus and her gyrating on stage. If you haven’t heard it; and I highly expect that even grannies have heard the term; this gyrating has been termed Twerking.

Twerking isn’t what this article is about; but I would like to paint the image in your mind of Miley’s tongue hanging out her mouth during her performance at the VMA’s; or on the red carpet or any time really.

Now imagine her foot attached to it.

This is what happens when veteran celebrities start to speak out after Miley’s foot falls out her mouth along with that tongue. Let me put you in the picture:

The silly little girl started a rather nasty twitter tirade against artists with mental illnesses; which to me added to her tasteless behaviour. Knowing well that mental illness and suicide shouldn’t be taken lightly and that Miley’s tirade can be defined as cyber bullying; I would really love to tell her to “stick that tongue back in her foul mouth where it belongs and SHUT IT!” As a parent I feel it is my right and responsibility on behalf of those of us who want to raise our children the right way!

Because my words may not have as much power I will quote the words of the amazing Annie Lennox who has in the last week also voiced her concerns about this issue: “On reflection I will say that sexuality is an inherent and profound part of life. There is absolutely nothing "wrong" about our sexuality or sensuality per se - But if a performing artist has an audience of impressionable young fans and they want to present a soft porn video or highly sexualised live performance, then it needs to qualify as such and be X rated for adults only. I'm talking from the perspective of the parents of those young fans. The whole thing is about their children's protection. Is it appropriate for seven year olds to be thrusting their pelvises like pole dancers? I really don't think so. Boundaries need to be put in place so that young kids aren't barraged by market forces exploiting the "normalisation" of explicit sex in under age entertainment. That means - no audiences under 18. Simple! Well - not quite. The Internet has put paid to "boundaries" and "simple".”
Now after reading the words of a renowned and respected celebrity, and activist; I have to say I agree. I really wish that little stars like Miley would listen to esteemed advice. I wish the world wasn’t apathetic to this disease infesting young children. Like it or not sex ruins children’s lives. Maybe I am just old fashioned, but I believe that children should remain children and adult behaviours and concerns should be for ADULTS. To be frank I also wouldn’t mind being warned prior to a Miley video being broadcasted on television; so I can change the channel.
Going back to Annie Lennox… she posed an interesting question on her facebook page: “A question for all parents of young children under the age of 15. How do you feel about the barrage of powerful market forces upon your kids? Do you feel overwhelmed, as if there's nothing you can do about it?”

and I will leave you with just that – How do you feel?
