Shaming the Snake Pastor

2015-08-09 19:34

Poverty is so deeply rooted in South Africa, people have lost hope. A few months back I read about pastor Penuel Mnguni of End Times Disciples Ministries feeding his congregation snakes and rats. And again what’s poverty got to do with it some will ask? Lack of knowledge and education is the root of poverty. Sometimes people do things because they don’t know better.

We live in a country that is governed by constitution and laws. While everyone is applauding EFF for destroying the “Snake Pastor’s Tent” we need to remember that vandalism and taking the law into your own hands is wrong. Destroying property is illegal, even more disturbing when an aspiring political party is involved in such conduct. How do we trust when in leadership people won’t wake up to their houses burned down  due to different beliefs and differences in opinions?

I am slightly impressed that the SPCA gave this pastor a warning regarding animal cruelty. While we may argue that spiritual things are often difficult to prove….the same animals were created by God too. South Africa as a country is very lenient when it comes to animal cruelty. A year ago we had pigs suffering and eating each other at Thandi Modise’s farm….where was the EFF? Did they do something to rescue those pigs? Funny how they are quick to save adults who can make choices for themselves. Those people were not forced to eat any of those animals and all facts need to be considered.

As a country that has recently or still dealing with xenophobia and now this. Funny how we are always preaching human rights as a country yet suddenly we applaud EFF for this. While I applaud EFF for challenging the act and behaviour, I certainly do not agree about physically destroying someone else’s property. The constitution is there for a reason and we have social and moral responsibility to uphold its core values.

I see the EFF adding value through instilling and promoting education so that people can make informed choices. How do you ensure those people don’t continue eating the animals even when the tent is destroyed? By destroying the tent you are not solving the problem, another pastor will come up and start his own thing the next day. How do we as a country make sure that the people in our communities are empowered? Restore the dignity of the people, empower and educate. Let us say NO to violence!
