Should we let Madiba go?

2013-04-04 06:13

South Africa, Africa and the rest of the world is in prayer. A prayer to keep one of the most important celebrated and loved person, Nelson Mandela alive. The old man has given us a lot of scares. I now cannot recall how many times he has been secretly taken to military hospitals to undergo lung surgeries.

At the top of the list of the things that our SA-Presidency can deliver fast and efficiently will have to be Madiba's health condition status. Mac has become the face of Madela's health overnight. Channels on Dstv have also started to play his obituary while the old man is still alive. Even his grandson signed funeral broadcasting rights to some channels a long time ago.

With our prayers, our love and the fear of the unknown we have managed to keep the old statesman alive. There are some of us who fear of a genocide that might happen when Mandela is gone. There are those who believe he symbolizes democracy and we might lose it if he were to go. And there are those who simply love him for being Madiba and what he has done for the country.

More importantly, there is a wife, ex-wife, his children and grandchildren even great grandchildren. To them, Mandela is more than a nation hero. He is a husband; he is a father and a grand-father. To them Mandela is family and they simply cannot live with the thought of losing their loved and loving Madiba.

Wait I have been talking about a man and people around him. I did not ask him what he thinks or feels. I don't know the pains he is in or how he feels about being always on medication. I don't know if he is enjoying his age. I don't know if he still wants to be here. But I know what I want. I want him here alive, to keep the peace, to be my hero, to be husband to be a father to be a grandfather. I want to see him smile again or do one of his dance moves or share one of his famous jokes. Am I being selfish? I am only thinking about what I want and what I think my country needs. What does Madiba want? That I dont know. Today I just had a flashback. I thought of my friend Siyanda in primary school. He came to school crying some other day. I asked what was wrong. Siyanda told me his grandmother died at the age of 86. What made Siyanda even sadder was the fact that he was called next to his grandmother's bed side. Family members told him to let his grandmother go. She was in pain; apparently, the love, the prayers and fears kept Siyanda's grandmother alive. And Siyanda along with his family had to say one thing "Makhulu siyakuthanda kwaye siyakukhulula" Trans (Grandma we love you and we are letting you go). Within an hour of them saying that, Siyanda's grandmother went to heaven. Siyanda was told.

Is it possible that our beloved 94 years old father is kept by us alive? Should we instead of wishing him well tell him it’s ok Tata, we will be fine without you?

I want Mandiba alive. But this was just a thought. I'm a Xhosa man and I've seen families do this. Should we let Madiba go?

Before everyone starts crucifying me, I must make it a point that I do understand we are not God, its not up to us.  But I know we can, with our hearts and man-made machines and medication prolong lives.
