South Africa is being Murdered! Marikana In Memoriam

2013-08-12 12:05

The current South African Police Service is comprised of characters that are anachronistic museum pieces. The actions, comportment, behaviour and allegiance of the current South African police is still rooted in the Apartheid metaphysic.

Now that we are in the eve of in memoriam - an anniversary remembering the victims of Marikana we need to sit down coolly and take stock of this atrocious massacre. We need to seriously ask why did that brutal massacre happen. All the video footage in the public domain points us to one direction. Why did the Police acted in the manner they acted.  What motivates the Police to shoot masses of Black people and thereafter celebrate in laughter and delights, very satisfied of what they have achieved? Why  did the Police – the institution that is supposed to understand and respect human life - acted in such a manner that leaves everyone wondering and shocked about such inhumane brutality they unleashed on masses of Black people?

The vicissitudes of the dawn of democratic South Africa did not give the Police force the required impetus to evolve into a civil force that would function in the new dispensation. We can see the police from the angle of protest marches across the country, from the murder of Andries Tatane to Marikana massacre - the Police still wear the garbs of apartheid mentality. They function and act under the traditions and psychology of Apartheid - of being vicious to gatherings of masses of Black people.

So what is evolving daily in every aspect of life in South Africa is that we had reconciliation not a transformation. There was no transformation in South Africa. South Africa is very much still the same - just like a drunken actor on his acting costume long after the drama is over.

The Police still cherish and thrive on their misconstruction of the masses of black people as enemies of the government that must be subserviently and fanatically served resolutely, as it has always been during apartheid times.

In George Orwell’s classic satire, Animal Farm; Napoleon crowned his usurpation of absolute power by deploying the “armed forces” of the dogs, whose allegiance he conscripted and deployed to the service of his impious ends.

To this end, the Police ontologically view itself as an enemy of the Black people. It is a culture, a tradition, a psychology that pays allegiance to the notion that Black people's lives are very cheap. This psychology is still alive and very well indeed! The police shot at the miners and nothing is done about it - life goes on and even today nothing has been done of note to deal with this grotesque event. The Police keep their own version or construction of law and order most of the time to the detriment and utter violation of the new democratic Constitution.

Our Police are simply not fathered and nursed in a democratic ambient. The seeds of this institution like all other institutions in the country is born and watered with oppression, brutal suppression and hounding of corners of the country where black people gathers. The Police during apartheid was moulded to become a sharp arrow in the hands of the apartheid government to be used as trained dogs hunting down and eviscerating opposition to their pillage, decimation, and total conquest.

The questions remains: why has the Police failed woefully in their fundamental duties of tackling crime and yet cuts down masses of innocent Black people at will every now and then?

Our police are deranged tyrants that deserves every pellet of wrath that our anger and disappointment can command. They are debauchee and a dinosaur that should have been retired into the Apartheid Museum long ago.
