South Africa’s disenchanted re-enchantment

2015-02-03 06:39

Recent events are unearthing those once familiar romantic and radical racist fairy-tales on both sides of South Africa’s racial divide.

The notion that superfluous skin pigmentation can mysteriously and magically manifest into some form of mystical superhuman power, is rising from the ashes.

The supernatural and irrational tale of the demonic enemy, a tribal tale that had lost its malignant force in Mandela’s Rainbow illusion is now yearning for a return – to the mythical perfect past for some, and mythical perfect future for others.

Disenchantment may be the fate for the majority of South Africans, but at least it is opening up those familiar old vistas of re-enchantment for racist South Africans.

However irrational, emotional hording will provide only minor respite to the racist behind whose mask of belligerence lies fear and despair, but new possibilities will not even open up for those pernicious ANC politicians.

The ANC’s project of incessantly ‘taking’ may be unfamiliar to those under the spell of mass hypnosis, but old news for those open and fair minded few who are immune to cheap thrills showbiz.

Viewing from my seat in this decrepit circus tent, the ANC power elite are the new ‘they’ and the rest of us are just us. This is the new divide in our ‘aristocratic democracy’.

And the truth is that enchantment cannot materialize in the unthinking ‘iron cage’ of ANC party life. This is the fate of all conforming ANC politicians.

Like slavish members of a royal cult – their fate is to be disenchanted in their enchantment.

They just won’t admit it.
