SPIN: Apartheid government causes ANC corruption

2015-01-13 07:50

At the ANC’s 103 year birthday bash, President Zuma claimed that apartheid was the cause of government corruption.

Let us dissect this statement. In logical terms it can be recasted as:

If the apartheid government was corrupt then the ANC government would also be corrupt.

As you can see, there are many things wrong about this claim. I focus on two:

First, even if it is true that the apartheid government was corrupt, it does not follow that the ANC government should be corrupt.

Since these two parties are independent self-directing entities, it is difficult to understand how the one could possibly influence the moral conduct of the other. The apartheid government as a cause is therefore irrelevant.

Second, it omits several other well documented causes that provide a better explanation for corruption in political parties in general. These include factors such as self-enrichment, electioneering financing and poor governance.

When you compare the speeches of Zuma’s ANC with Mandela’s and Luthuli’s ANC and assess their intellectual standards, you have to wonder....

Perhaps at the age of 103, the party has been struck by dementia.
