Spreading Ideas

2014-07-27 16:58

In South Africa, we often get forced to become realists in the way we think and approach situations. The South African way of thinking is one where the future is rarely considered unless you speak of a 'practical' of securing jobs for the emerging youth in the country.

Now this does not sound wrong or regressive at all. In fact, many would tell you that it is forward thinking. Well, I disagree totally with that notion. Ideas and the process of creativity is a powerful one that could shape the way we see the world and the way we function in the world.

I was at a TED event this past weekend at the University of the Free State which was dubbed TEDxUFS and I was amazed at how many people have ideas that could possibly re-shape how we function in a society. One of the biggest realisations that occurred to me during the conference was that more and more Africans are finding ways to solve some of Africa's problems by using solutions that all come from simple ideas.

A culture of creative thinking will produce confidence in the youth and with confidence comes a better execution of tasks. Imagine a future where Africans are global leaders of industry and an Africa that is economically more powerful because of ideas that were spread.

Many of South Africa's problems can be solved by investing in the ideas of society, ideas that are forward thinking. The co-curator of the TEDxUFS event, Lerothodi Molete left the guests who attended with a powerful one-liner, "Believe in your own personal ideas".

South Africa, it is time we spread ideas that home grown. Ideas that will move not just mountains in Africa but far beyond our African borders. If there is one thing no one can take away from a human being, it is the power to come up with ideas.
