Stand Up, Speak Out, Let your voice be Heard!

2014-09-17 10:57

Freedom of Speech & Expression is embodied in our Constitution.

We are able to speak out for what we believe in, and even raise awareness around any just cause that we feel passionately about. But yet, so many of us would rather sit in silence and not do or say a thing. For “fear of rejection” or to "fit in” we prefer to be led by those who don’t fear their fellow man and aren’t afraid to stand out from the crowd.

Recently as I was driving on the highway, trudging through traffic, trying to get to work on time (or as close to it as possible!) I noticed a banner hanging over the side of one of the bridges. On that banner, in bold black letters, a message read “Hoot against e-tolls!” with people atop the bridge waving and cheering for support. Me being the patriot that I am, I hooted uncontrollably to show my support for this noble cause! Needless to say, I received a number of startled and some concerned looks from my fellow commuters.

This event got me thinking and brought me to the realization that I have a newfound respect for people who stand up for what they believe in. Be it e-tolls, the conflict in Gaza & Israel or most recently the Judge Masipa's ruling on the Oscar Trial.

We live in an age where Social Media plays a crucial role in our lives and is something we utilise religiously. But how many of us utilise these platforms effectively? Most of us - myself included - are guilty of utilising these avenues merely for mediocre day-to-day events of our lives (yes I'm looking at those of you that have just “Instagrammed” a photo of your last meal!) and our mood is controlled by how many “likes” we receive.

Now I'm not saying that we should refrain from doing these things (I mean, what would Facebook be without all the selfies?) but I do feel that we can also use social media as a means to get a message across, to build our careers and create a brand for ourselves. And what better way to do this, than with a tool that we are all too familiar with?

So let’s make that next tweet, photo share or like count!

The greatest fear in the world is the opinion of others, and the moment you’re unafraid of the crowd, you’re no longer a sheep, you become a lion. A great roar arises in your heart, the roar of freedom. – Osho”
