Stop alcohol abuse

2015-10-14 15:24

Ever wonder why alcohol consumption is strictly and without reservation prohibited in Islam? The tragic tale of Tobias Ntuli , an alcoholic ,once a brilliant scientist  now homeless and living on the streets of Pretoria ['Alcohol reduces scientist to living on streets' (Mercury 13-10-2015)] presents exhibit "A.".

At least  he is alive, albeit down and out as the cliche goes, unlike those who perished as a result of overconsumption of alcohol or the thousands who end up committing crimes. He can be rehabilitated, plucked off the streets and to reconnect with his profession but recall that he is a recidivist.

With powerful  businesses investing  in an industry with an unlimited budget it's a David versus Goliath struggle but like the biblical story the evil can be brought down.  Alcohol contributed towards marital breakdowns, domestic violence and abuse, and a massive loss in producitivity , the latter leading to loss of jobs.Families have been reduced to penury . Something activistic has to be done and that is education and an awareness exercise underwritten the by civil society in partnership with government.People need to get involved  in having a say as to how alcohol licences and the right to operate taverns and shebeens are granted.

Total abstention is the solution towards a responsible and healthy lifestyle and it thus a mockery when adverts flighted on television encouraging alcohol consumption with the almost invisible 'not to be sold to persons under 18 years' dimly flashing just below the alluring and distractive advertisement, making a mockery of the virtue of abstention.

I hope that someone in the media shows this to the Minister of Health,Aaron Motsoaledi, who should introduce regulations, as he did in the case of tobacco, that ban the advertisement of alcohol on national television as well as have the health warnings, such as alcohol consumption leads to cirrhosis of the liver and other diseases, and have those labels put on alcohol products as well as visibly displayed in liquor stores and outlets.

I don't have the stats but the number of employees who have been dismissed because of being found drunk at work is shocking and yet government will do nothing?
