Stop Women Violence and Abuse

2012-12-06 06:31

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence is part of the global campaign for Women’s Human Rights.

The key message of the Campaign is that violence against women is a human rights violation, a serious crime against humanity and also to create awareness in society that violence against women and children is unacceptable.

Violence against women is a behaviour that knows no culture, religion, race, tradition, social status or country. It is one of the biggest scourges in our communities and there can be no justification for it.

We know women are subjected to physical abuse but what about the "silent killers" - verbal and emotional abuse? Many women live with the brutal effects of these abuses for life. No amount of counselling or therapy can make them overcome their years of suffering, pain and sorrow.

Some men believe that by giving their wives money to run the household and to take care of her material needs as well as the material needs of the children, they are exempt from carrying out any other duties towards their wives and children. But money cannot compensate for love, attention and quality time spent together.

According to some statistics one out of every three women in the world has been a victim of violence in her lifetime, violence against women is one of the four major causes of death on the planet today and thirty percent of women are being physically injured by their partners.

Violence against women is so widespread that it affects the lives of women everywhere, cutting across all communities, race, families and cultures. In times of wealth, poverty, peace or war, women are being raped, abused, threatened, beaten and killed.

We need to make certain that we concentrate on educating women and children that abusive behaviour is totally unacceptable and must be stopped. Silence breeds consent. We need to break the culture of silence and motivate victims to speak out against violence so that the culprits are apprehended, charged and jailed.

The issue to address the rights of women is an important and an urgent one. To tackle the issue correctly and head on, campaigns, speeches, studies and reports must decode into real action and delivery.

Our society must understand that no one is exempt when it comes to violence against women and children; we could either be victims or perpetrators. Each one of us can make a difference to end violence against our mothers, our sisters, our daughters and children by joining and promoting this noble cause.

I appeal to all individuals, religious leaders and religious organisations to address these issues. Women are being exploited because they are the weaker sex. Let us all join hands in fighting this scourge. There is a saying which reads: "Men may be the hearts but women are the heartbeats." Hearts are useless without the heartbeats.
