Symptoms of the 'Nongqawuse Syndrome' in South Africa

2014-12-14 17:21

Nongqawuse’s millennial prophecy was that the Xhosa nation must burn all livestock and crops as sacrifice so that the mighty Xhosa ancestral spirits will rise concealed by the strength of a mighty whirlwind and drive the racist White colonial settlers to the sea. The prophecy promised that after driving colonialists to the sea, our African ancestral deities will restore the ancient days; restore the eternity of yesterday and then re-establish the traditional society that had been eroded by the brutality of colonial settlers and the deceit of missionaries. As we now know, the prophecy had detrimental consequences. It later proved to be a disastrous, toxic prophecy!

If anything, Nongqawuse prophecy with all its good intentions, helped the white colonial settlers consolidate their power and dominion against a food insecure, starved and weakened Xhosa nation that had burnt all its sources of food.

If you don’t find this ‘Nongqawuse Syndrome’ in the utterances of the African National ‘Criminals’ (ANC), South African pseudo-Communist Party (SACP), the Economic Freedom Fu**ers (EFF) then you haven’t been listening closely to their prophecies of economic freedom and promises of ushering the downtrodden masses to a ‘better life for all’ or dreams of establishing a ‘classless society’ and borderless South Africa among other lies.

The truth is that although they operate from different flanks, at the heart of the SACP, EFF, COSATU and other Leftists' policies are certain ‘Nongqawuse tendencies’ of promulgating populist policies of self-destruction and national suicide as emancipatory options that will free the poorest of the poor from the bondages of poverty.

Policies like ‘expropriation of land without compensation’, establishing a legal minimum wage, nationalization of banks and the abolishment of administrative borders are classical economics 101 textbook blunders that can only lead to disaster, unemployment, food insecurity and corruption all of which will accelerate the free fall of the impoverished masses in to further depths of grinding poverty once they are implemented.

My opinion is that the current breed of socialists in South African politics is nothing but a bunch of opportunists who see a gap in the country’s political market, and they are exploiting that gap for proceeds of power by occasionally throwing around the ideas of Karl Marx, quoting Captain Thomas Sankara and misinterpreting Frantz Fanon. Some have gone as far as wearing the red berets formerly worn by Captain Thomas Sankara and wearing the duty gear of impoverished workers to give substance and appeal to their populist deceit.

The reality is that Nzimande and his SACP are in some ‘alliance’ bed with the capitalists, Malema Inc. /EFF carries within it fascist tendencies and seeds of anarchy, hooliganism and dictatorship. So a sober minded citizen must realize that their disastrous rhetoric must never be made state policy or else like Nongqawuse’s prophetic prescriptions their policies will hurt the downtrodden unemployed Black youths they seek to empower. So just like Nongqawuse -Julius and Blade are false prophets, exploiting the desperations of their own people and promising them economic freedom and “classless society”.

These two luxury-bound self-styled wanna-be ‘revolutionary’ socialists are in my view different patients of the same condition-the ‘Nongqawuse Syndrome’. If their populist policies are acted upon, the result will be ‘an encyclopaedia of error’, a catalog of self-destruction.

South Africans must learn from Zanu PF Nogqawuses in Zimbabwe led by ‘Nongqawuse-in-Chief’ Robert Mugabe, that any populist project of land ‘expropriation without compensation’ will see ‘comrades’ inheriting large tracts of land whilst the ‘masses’ inherit food insecurity and starvation. In my view going as far as naming the occupied settlements as ‘Malemaville’ is blatant hero-worshipping and it’s even more disgraceful than President Mugabe’s own project of land grabs. How can you name your neighborhood after Julius maar?

That is why I find it sad that the ‘masses’ are so fascinated by the theatrics of the EFF in Parliament to the extent of forgetting the substantive consequences of that party stands for; the “seven non-negotiable pillars”. If you don’t find at least one “non-negotiable” pillar that will surely crush you to the bone it’s probably because you haven’t read all of them, or you read them all but did not comprehend their socio-economic and political consequences.

In Northern Ndebele we say “Ingwe idla ngamabala ayo” (a leopard fascinates its prey with its spots before devouring it), and I think the EFF is doing a good job fascinating its prey. The masses make good prey for any political entity. Even the Deceitful/Democratic Alliance (DA) has gone as far as securing a steady supply of Black puppets to be strategically deployed to Parliament just to get the ‘poor’s vote’, in fact it has even gone as far as applauding Helen Zille’s disgraceful assimilation of African culture by wearing the ‘Whitened’ versions the traditional attires worn by our Black African mothers and cooking on open fire just to lure Black voters.

If you think of it, compared to the EFF and the SACP, Zille’s strand of the Nongqawuse Syndrome is the deadliest of them all since she is willing to patronize Black people for their vote whilst ensuring that South Africa is a haven for White monopoly capital to exploit a predominantly black working class and dilute all empowerment and affirmative action policies then finally ensure that the Black skinned Africans are not the ruling majority in the land of their forefathers.

My humble opinion is that if you think there is still to rise a politician who will be a ‘champion of the masses’ or a (wo)man of the people who will liberate the masses from poverty and usher them to 'economic freedom', you are either a madman or a naked hero-worshipper; the poor are alone in the fight against poverty.

These Nongqawuses we call leaders, revolutionaries, liberators, commanders, comrades etc. will only intoxicate us with populism, start land revolutions to enrich their cronies, refuse to vacate office due to their culture of permanence, defend their ‘Commanders-in-Thief’ and amass themselves with benefits from state funds; Or like the ‘Madam’ and her lot, they will sit back and send Black Parliamentary ‘Leaders’ to go head to head with their fellow Blacks in Parliament to safeguard white interests. So the only way for these luxury-bound populists and wanna-be socialist revolutionaries (or racists-in-hiding like Zille) to help in delivering the masses from poverty is by cooperating in the poor people’s fight against corruption, maladministration and abuse of taxpayers’ funds. Until we realize that a communal self-help type of governance and education are worthier emancipators of the poor than populist promises of free houses, free land and free everything, South Africa will remain a perpetual sufferer of the ‘Nongqawuse Syndrome’...
