The Beauty in Nonprofit

2014-10-03 17:14

Managing talent in the workplace is no longer the responsibility of an employer only. Everyone has a responsibility to develop and manage their own talent. I often hear a lot of people complaining that they are not given enough exposure. I think everyone goes through a phase when they feel they are not being challenged enough in the world of work at some point in their career. Everyone longs for that great feeling of waking up to a purpose. We are unique and have different priorities, which leads to having different motivational factors in life. Others are motivated through money or status and there is nothing wrong with that.

Many young people long for career advancement and they feel that they are not progressing within their desired pace in that area. Career advancement only comes when you focus on the right things. We cannot divorce career advancement to experience and knowledge. We also cannot run away from the evil and reality of knowledge hoarding in the world of work. The question is then how do you grow when no one is willing to share their knowledge. It is simple create other opportunities in other areas that will benefit you! The commercial sector is losing a lot of driven and motivated individuals to the nonprofit sector.

South Africa has so many graduates who are unemployed and professionals in the world of work who are not entirely satisfied with what they do. I would like to introduce the nonprofit sector as an opportunity that can offer skills and experience to South African youth. Nonprofit organizations exist to create social wealth, to improve the quality of life for a range of beneficiary groups. The commercial sector strives to create material wealth in the form of money, profits, which are distributed to owners, shareholders and others. Nonprofit organizations tend  to think in terms of their stakeholders, a term which embraces beneficiaries, staff, volunteers, supporters and elements of the wider community.

Yes working in nonprofit is not everyone’s cup of tea and I am certainly not advocating that we all go and work in nonprofits. Some people want more than just a job, they want additional rewards in terms of personal satisfaction, beyond those of the commercial world. The nonprofit sector can be great opportunity to get exposure on areas that one would not necessary get 1st hand experience in their world of work.

Some will think owhhh it’s just the ACTIVIST in me writing. How can one work for free or for peanuts? Money is not everything!! It is important for young people to seek jobs that can give them satisfaction. In order to receive one must be willing to give. South Africa does not need to wait upon the government to bring solutions. I see the nonprofit sector as a big change mechanism in our country. South Africa needs individuals who can be part of the solution and not part of the problem.

The same principle is applicable to all areas of life, one should not wait for things to happen but go out there and make things happen.
