The Burden and Joys of True Friendship

Masters create worlds that we live in. They create paradigms and inspire paradigm changes. The future is already fully formed in their prodigious imaginations. Their lives are factories of ideas. They either create paradigm changes in meaning or inspire movements in that direction. Their vision sweeps across the world and affects human development.

I have a book here I am reading; it is titled Uncommon Friends by James D. Newton. The book is an exposition - a vivid descriptions of the close friendship of great men of modern history: Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Samuel Firestone.

Thomas Edison brought the world electricity, Henry Ford was the man to figure out that cars can be made in such a way that many people in society can afford them, and Harvey Firestone of course brought to the world pneumatic car tires, car tires with air inside them.  These men were very close friends that they ate,, and went fishing together and many times traveled on trains for long journeys.

In those sanctuaries of quiet deep reflection and close friendship, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Harvey Firestone literally created the modern world that we are living in. Our modern world is the root and offspring of these three men’s imaginations.

This will forever become the mark of great genuine friendship. In a genuine friendship every dot connects. Reality becomes one. Mind and matter embrace in ontological exactness.  It is in tranquilities of genuine friendship like that of Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Harvey Firestone that the heavens of knowledge open up and whisper a timeless message.

Thomas Edison, Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone did not keep the message to themselves. They knew that their relevance rests in not hoarding the message, but in delivering it. They gave the message to the world, and here we are!

Uncommon Friends, delves deep into these great men’s friendship, unearthing their deeply held convictions – their inner life, the humor, the values and their faith.

They all came to believe that the wisest man is the best man, and that his wisdom can be taught even to the humblest person on earth. In their great friendship together they questioned everything people took for granted. They taught that people should listen to their conscience – their inner voice that tells them what is truly right. And if you don’t know keep asking questions about yourself and others until you find out.

They asked; is your first duty to governments or to your own conscience? If government decisions clashes with your conscience what are you going to do? Which is more important? Is it the individual or the State? This kind of free inquiry occupied their friendship. And once you start asking questions it is hard to stop.

Another set of questions they asked throughout their friendship was the order of the world. Thomas Edison argued that the truths he discovered of electricity were not from his reasoning deductions but they were ideal memories that exist in some timeless realm which his reason or any person’s reasoning cannot understand or apprehend. Harvey Firestone asked, what is behind life because we don’t experience reality in this world, but only its dim shadow. What is the prime mover of life?

They believed that there is an energy that is working through them to bring revolutionary innovations and discoveries.

Max Planck, who was and still regarded as the greatest scientific mind on the planet, was in sync and in tune with these ideas. Max Planck's quantum theory revolutionized human understanding of atomic and subatomic processes, just as Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity revolutionized the understanding of space and time. Together they constitute the fundamental theories of 20th century physics.

As he accepted his Nobel Prize Max Planck said: “As a man who has devoted his whole life to the most clear headed science, to the study of matter, I can tell you as the result of my research this much: there is no matter as such. All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscience and intelligent Mind.  This Mind is the matrix of all matter”.
