The new African trend “Trophy Husbands”!!!

2014-08-02 21:25

We are all created in our own sense of uniqueness. What differentiate women from men is our natural duties, our ability to nurture, give birth and care for others. I am all for independence when it comes to women what is disturbing is to find people still discussing who should pay on a date. To bring this closer to home there is a trend that is going on where our young successful African sisters are babysitting husbands and boyfriends that are not working. The main purpose of Lobola is to build friendship between two families and also test if the future son in-law will be able to take care of the girl. Times are changing and some women are earning more than men but have we neglected our culture so much that we even allow our daughters to get married without Lobola? Through nature men were created to take care, protect and provide for their families.

Are African women being pressured into getting married such that they have dropped their standards? I am all for true love that knows no boundaries. What I do fear is an idle mind as it becomes the devils playground. Some men genuinely cannot find a job and some are just lazy. I grew up to the idea of men having trophy wives that are not working nor educated at times. The concept of a trophy wife is too have someone you can show off, control, who will fully depend on you and not question any of your actions. I see now African women are going for trophy husbands. Do they serve the same function or are african sisters getting desperate to be called a Mrs........

“A men is said to be the head of the house”

Any women who takes up an unemployed man must be willing to give that men the full respect he deserves, accept the situation and work as a team. Any women who decides to have a child with an unemployed man must also make sure that her pocket is wide enough to take all the responsibility that comes with a child.

I have seen wives who supported and encouraged their unemployed husbands till their husbands were successful. I have also seen guys who sponge off from women and have not intentions of supporting the wife and the kids. All the good Samaritans that have stood by their partners through such difficult times will tell you that it comes at a very high emotional cost. Society is so crazy about marriage such that as soon as a girl turns a certain age and there are no wedding bells, you hear sarcastic comments. A women might be able to afford the trophy husband but the key question is whether they have the emotional maturity and strength to deal with him.

Women need to realise that they do not need any validation from society to prove their worth. It is ok to be single. It is ok not to have a child.
