The new Manners App

2013-10-01 10:06

When you are ill you tend to notice the invasiveness of technology.

It would seem that besides the irritation of text slang, Joe and Mary Soap seem to have forgotten that their manners should exist through the airwaves.

Let’s paint a few scenes here – shall we;

A)     You are ill: you really have no intention of speaking to anyone;

Your main objective is to down flu medication and drift off to Club Duvet and hear the restful soul music only DJ Pillow can deliver…

B)      You and your love have entered the cinema; the opening scene is taking you away on a journey and you plan to follow it into the imaginary world that only a motion picture can take you…

C)      You simply don’t want to be bothered and you leave the all important unavailable sign up on your WhatsApp and BBM; and you expect people to show you a little respect.

Now there are many more scenarios we could regale over – I think that these three; could easily cover those tell tale responses.

First things first: It would seem that your ailing health has no consequence to a person who wants something. For the regular “GIVER” this means that you will be bothered endlessly by “TAKERS” despite requests to appreciate your apparent situation.

Those of us who appreciate a little down time learn quickly that there are people in this world who are permanently attached to their mode of technology. Don’t get me wrong; I am the first person to congratulate someone on embracing modernised communication. It perturbs me to no end though - those communicators have this undisputable disregard for what their mothers instilled in them.

If I see a pesky no entry sign on Black Berry Messenger I take it that you put the sign there for a reason. I am not going to ignore it and deliberately blurt out what I want from the person on my contact list. Why the hell was the sign invented then anyways?? I would be rich if I invented a manners app that activated on IM and social media... not so...

As humans; we have to realise that although our style of communication has become wireless; and literally tags along where ever we go; that people are just – PEOPLE.

There is a squishy being on the other end of the WIFI line; it needs sleep; it ails; it feels; it has the entire plethora of human emotions; and more than anything – every single one of us deserve respect.

So thinking back on telecommunications back when I was a child… my mother did not make a call after 7pm. There was such a thing as family time. If someone made a late night call we expected the person to be on their death bed and needing our immediate attention.

Nowadays I resort to Facebook to tell rude people off in bulk. Why? Because today there is never only ONE person whose manners left the building along with Elvis.
