The problem with education

2016-04-15 21:11

I always knew I was Destined for great things in my life. I didn't come from a rich family or anything; quite the opposite actually, but for some reason I just always had this self-belief that I will make it big life. That belief translated into me being a straight-A student in high school, because at that time that was the only path I knew, the only one they showed you. My thinking was: be the best student; secure a good scholarship; and get a great job. It wasn't a bad plan and indeed it is a plan that has been proven successful countless times to be honest, and will continue to be so. But here's what they don't tell you about that plan, it doesn't work for everyone.

I'm not going to waste anybody's time bashing our education system and it's  inability to bring the best out of every individual. But the truth of the matter is it is a system that works for but a few and completely chews and spits out the rest. Like I said I'm not gonna bash it, because it is necessary for every human being to be educated even if u not gonna pursue anything academically inclined eventually. The problem I have with the education system as it is brainwashes our young people by making them think if they're not good at school then they won't be good in life; that if I'm not getting Straight A's at history, language, science or whatever else then I must not be worth the air I'm breathing. I might not be good enough to amount to anything in life. I must suck.

And that's exactly the thought process going on in our children's minds throughout their schooling these days. All day, every day, that is what it reminds them. They become institutionalised to think like that. Many go on to live the remainder of their adult lives believing it to be true. But it's not true of cause. It doesn't mean that if I can't solve for 'x' then I can't cook. Or if I don't know what element reacts with nitrogen to form ammonia then I can't weld. Or if you put me in front of a desk with a paper and pencil (with some big mama hovering around) and ask me to draw and label the structure of locust and I can't do it, doesn't mean I'd make a bad carpenter.

I've mentioned a few professions already which education makes us I believe we can't do simply because somebody else who's more gifted with qualities relating to memory and IQ, and has more interest on these things can do them. The premise then becomes because so and so is able to do it, then it must be that there's something wrong with you because you can't do it. That is a calamity. It is tantamount to a weightlifter saying because you can't lift this 200 kilogram weight above your head and stand up straight then there must be something wrong with you. That can be.

I can't say I know who to blame for this but something has to change and needs to do so now. I went the whole nine yards with the system since matriculating with exemption (which included four distinctions in maths, science, biology and my home language), went to university and passed there as well and finally finished with a long stint sitting at home doing nothing. That forced me to find other means to make a living for myself, and no don't worry I didn't resort to crime. I started working on and nurturing a talent which I've always had all my life, sharpening it until it was as straight as an arrow.

In hindsight this is what I should've been doing all along, instead of following a pass simply because society dictated to me that it was the best past to follow. It reminds me of the movie Accepted. I mean I know it's just a movie, a really ridiculous one it has to be said. But if we look closely at ourselves and our society, and what we expect of our young people, maybe that movie won't seem so ridiculous. I say let them be free to do whatever they are good at, whatever they like doing without judging or belittling them.
