The Shepherd Who Sold The Sheep To The Wolves

2015-02-27 09:37

The Son of Man always used parables and figures of speech to relay certain fundamental teachings to the people. In one of his classical analogies, he likens the society to sheep, their leaders to shepherds, and the aristocracy to wolves.

He stressed the difference between a true shepherd and a hireling. A true shepherd would lay his life down for the sheep, even when faced by a ravenous pack of thirsty wolves. But a hireling on the other hand, once he weighs the scales of his own survival against the attacking scavengers and discovers himself compromised, would without argument dash for dear life and leave the wolves to scatter the flock and tear it to shreds.

In the scenario which involves the hireling or false shepherd’s cowardly misdeeds, the wolves at hand would also be calculating in nature. They would have in their reserves the intellect to create a false impression so to achieve their end goal of crunching into organic and pasture fed mutton. Droplets of dribble almost stain the drawing board as they plan their offense in their oak furnished studies.

The True Shepherd

There’s always a definite challenge when wolves in attack are confronted with the reality of a true shepherd. This one is an ultimate party pooper, by any standards. Worst of all would be a case wherein he could not only put up a good fight against their attack, but could also overcome them and promptly end their miserable predatory lives.

Many true shepherds have similarly laid their lives down for the sheep so boldly. They offered no backdoor access in exchange for a glittering reward to the scheming wolves of wealth and power. By the time the wolves are ravaging the flock amidst a cloud of dust, discord and panic, the true shepherd would be long dead and gone.

It is rationally impossible for foreign invaders to have their way massacring the population while its army remains intact. We can never have a situation wherein the society is suffering from foreign abuse in parallel with a loyal leadership. Somewhere somehow, there must have been some scuffles, backstabbing, blackmailing, and bribery to render the conditions as hopeless and helpless.

Over centuries of the eternal battle between the wolves and the true shepherds, the shepherds had understandably advanced their methods and tactics of defence against the merciless wolves, who are but beasts driven by carnal instincts and nothing else. No, they may not be branded as devils in their savagery, but a nation of wolves just being wolves.

The False Shepherd

In essence, over time and experience in this universal conflict, it kept becoming harder for the wolves to penetrate the pearly gates when the real shepherds were standing guard. The hunt had turned into a dangerous endeavour altogether – a frustrating matter of life and death, which was by far not the true nature of the game. So the sly wolves made their awry return to the drawing boards, beyond the snuggly corridors of their wine estates.

What if they funded the creation of a legion of manipulative shepherds, who would without resistance grant them access to the flock so to feast? A false shepherd is the peak fantastical figure in a gluttonous wolf’s sweetest dream. This one either runs away when the wolves advance, or he winks and looks the other way as they sift through without a challenge, like a hot knife through butter.

The false shepherd would therefore expectedly create a very trustworthy image to the sheep, which nominated him to protect them while they graze in the fertile but perilous wild. Little do the sheep know that the shepherd in question had spent many drunken nights at the wolves’ habitats, and had long ago sold them out and was in severe debt with the ruthless scavengers.

Speech Of Deception

The disgraceful false shepherd would then say to the sheep unflinchingly, “Times have changed, and old habits have eroded. The wolves have grown weary of sheep meat, and are pursuing other game in our extremely rich wilderness. They only seek your friendship, that there might exist peace and trust between our historically conflicting groups.”

The sell-out would again proceed to say, “Personally I have taken my time to study the wolves, if they are trustworthy or plotting malice behind their olive branch offering. I would not be relaying this if I suspected one bit that they were dishonest. They have truly changed their ways. You have my word.”

In the silence that followed the sheep’s digesting such perception altering revelations, the skilled traitor would conclude his satanic hypnosis by adding thus: “In fact, the wolves have courteously built me a fine mansion among their plush estates, with a boundless and rich field of pasture all around it. They would be utterly humbled if you all moved there with me, to live among them as a symbol of reconciliation.”

A Creepy Reconciliation

As much as the sheep were extremely wary of all that wolves represented, and loathed anything that bears a reminder of them, they trusted and honoured their shepherd. After all, this was the same shepherd who was attacked and almost killed by the same wolves in one of their recent foiled attacks. But little did the sheep know the whole episode was a cleverly plotted act by the wolves and the reprehensible shepherd, to make the latter look heroic and dependable in the eyes of the sheep.

Such would be the beginning of a new era in the timeless and hostile relationship between the wolves and the sheep, whereby the former had found a way to keep smashing through the flock but without resistance and animosity. In the dead of night, a terrified cry would speedily get cut off by a snapping neck, followed by a rapid bustle of flesh and bone mincing jaws, until not even a strain of wool and a drop of blood remained as evidence of what had just occurred.

And in the bright but creepy morning in the land of the wolves, in the aftermath of another pitiless overnight slaughter of one of the defenseless sheep, the false shepherd would stand on the podium with dodgy bloodshot eyes and a foxy smile, and yet reassure the oblivious sheep that this was indeed the Promised Land, where sheep and wolves lay side by side in peace. ©
